Hi,

Based on Brian's feedback I took a bit more notice today of what my cruise control is doing. Only cancels when left blinker is triggered but not when right blinker is triggered. Otherwise works fine and cancels with brake pedal applied. Thanks, Scott

Hi Brian, as a follow up, cruise control cancels when right and left indicator used. Looks like I will need to swap out the stalk at some point. Could be a pig of a job removing the steering wheel and disconnecting the airbag connection, battery etc. Might leave this to the service mechanic.

Yes, I got The main Brisbane dealer to do it, due to airbag complications, and also at the time I didn't know what the real cause was. Keep in mind that different models have different blinker stalks, depending on functions, when mine was done there was only one correct blinker stalk in Australia at Sydney which they got for me.

Thank you. I know it is easy to flip the top part of the indicator stalk end off where the cruise control switches are to access internals to clean with a cotton bud. The thing is the cruise control on/off switch and end button work fine, so it is likely to be the actual stalk contacts at the steering wheel end, as I only have to slightly raise up or lower down to indicate and the cruise control cancels. All brake lights work fine also.

I may buy a new one on-line and get my local VW specialist (non dealer) to fit. I think it is one entire assembly for right and left stalks?

Does it always cancel the cruise, or is it inconsistent, when mine broke in the center area it was intermittent, sometimes it would cancel and sometimes not.

I hope a new one fixes yours and its not something else, as they are quite expensive.

Yes unfortunately it cancels 100% of the time! Having said that, I would prefer to obviously know for sure it is the stalk before splashing out for a new one. My VAG plug in reader does not show a fault... The only other thought is whether there is a specific fuse for the function (other than the cruise control switch and tap button)?

I have a 2007 T5 which also had a cruise control issue.
In the beginning it would randomly turn off cruise control on the highway.
This intermittent issue just became more and more common until finally the cruise control did not work.
My VAG COM never showed an error anywhere.

I tried removing the top plastic cover (where you set/reset cruise control) and cleaning all contacts with electrical contact cleaner / isopropol alcohol, however this did not fix the issue.

What WORKED:
I ended up removing the stalk, which actually wasn't that hard. I then used a multimeter to check continuity on each of the wires. I found that one of the wires (black I think) wasn't working.
I simply pushed a new piece of thin wire through the plastic stalk and used a soldering iron and tweezers to carefully replace the faulty wire, which is part of a ribbon cable.
This completely resolved the issue and a year and a half later I haven't had any issues.

I highly recommend you check continuity with a multimeter. The cost of a replacement stalk was crazy when I looked.
If you are not confident with a soldering iron or multimeter then at least try to remove the stalk and take it to any electronics bloke (not a car guy, an electronic repair place, eg tv, appliance, computer repair). Just ask if they can use a multimeter and soldering iron.

They should be able to test continuity and solder in a new wire for you which would cost no more than $20-30. Literally a 5min job.

Thanks for this. I may well give it a go. I was a little weary about pulling of the steering wheel and air bag modulel off. I understand that the top steering cowling pops off without removing the steering wheel, but probably will not give sufficient access to inspect the switch properly. I have a multi meter and soldering iron. Also no faults logged with my Vchecker scanner.

Removing the plastic steering cowling and then getting a screwdriver in to 'pop' out the airbag are the only tricky steps.

Our indicator stalk collapsed and we replaced the whole module, but because I like pulling things apart and working out what failed... well I did.

It seems that the only thing that broke was a single spring inside the mechanism... the short version is that I have an otherwise working indicator stalk mechanism in a box from a 2010 Multivan (6Q0 953 513 BC 9B9) which appears to be a slightly newer revision of the same part in the earlier models.

The part itself cost me over $250 + fitting!!! Bloody expensive little part that one... that and the ignition module... parts you need everyday too.

In any case, once you get yours out and if you can't fix it, you can check the part number to be sure it's the same one. From there I'm sure we can do a deal where you drop by, we see if we can't Macgyver the two parts together to get my old one working in exchange for a few $$ or beers

A further observation before I tackle this. It only disengages when I blip the stalk ever so slightly in any direction ( left, right, front, back). Interesting it works fine driving along indicating right or left first and then press the cruise button (to experiment) and it activates and stays on fine whilst the indicator is in left or right position. So very fine movement of the stalk causing the issue and nothing visually faulty or dirty in the cruise buttons or circuit board. So it will be at the steering shaft end of the stalk for sure.

Also, I think it is normal (but annoying) for the Cruise control to shut off when using indicator to change lane, at that has been the case for my 08 Multivan from new.
