Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • VW Transporter T5 08 2.5 BPC 4Motion oil and exhaust leak back of engine around turbo

    Hi all
For quite a while occasionally at traffic lights I get a strong exhaust smell in the cabin.
Now an oil leak has started at the back of the engine around the turbo becoming full of oil.
Took it to my VW mechanic and he said that there is an exhaust leak in the turbo gasket and because there is quite a bit of oil around the turbo he thinks that it might need a new turbo but will not know until the turbo is out.
Because it's 4Motion apparently it's a massive job to change the turbo gasket around $1000 labour alone.
The turbo has plenty of power no noticeable noise or smoke.
Spoke with a turbo specialist on the phone and he thinks that it might just need the bolts tightened around the turbo to fix the exhaust leak and the oil leak might be caused by the rocket cover breather tube being blocked.
    Any insights would be appreciated.
    Peter

There have been for many years issues with cracks in the manifold of the 2.5 engine , there is a thread on it somewhere on the forum .

Had the kerosene smell issue twice, on 08 had oil leak and replaced turbo gasket but occasionally still smelled and also on 12 with engine back pressure from blocked dpf I reckon

          Thanks for that!
My T5 is a 12/2008 BPC and should come with a cast manifold what doesn't have the same cracking problems as far I know.
