You’d be best sticking a multimeter in each of the contacts with ignition to ‘on’. You can probably pick them up for $20 and they have plenty of automotive uses.

Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled
After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.
Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before.
We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

No thats the wrong idea as I doubt any of those wires will do , best thing that I have done with ours is to run another wire back to the rear tailight plug and find the reverse light signal , most of the T5 models already have a trigger wire built into the factory head unit harness which will trigger the head unit to accept the reverse camera signal so it just need that signal from the reverse light to power up the camera at the rear .The wiper will only power up when its turned on and wont turn on the camera the rest of the time .

For some reason it didn't upload the second picture, but I was thinking tap into the number plate light power instead. To avoid running a wire again.
I don't really need the trigger wire to activate the camera as I can just tap the headunit screen to put it on

Have you tested that as normally the camera itself wont turn on until it gets a reverse signal from the reverse lights , yes another power supply when ignition is on will do the same but the problem could be the camera stays on all the time .As I posted the camera function in the head unit will normally be turned on when reverse is selected as the factory harness has a trigger wire built in , our camera comes on regardless of what media is on as soon as reverse is selected it mutes the sound and shows guidlines and rear view as well .We don,t need to tap any screen it comes on by itself when reverse is selected .

Yea mine doesn't work that way.
I hooked it up to the number plate lights, so to turn it on all I have to do is turn on the headlights.
Sourcing the trigger wire etc is not worth my time I decided.
My headunit has a digital button you press and will take you straight to the camera and doesn't stop playing music etc so I decided it's easier just to tap the screen and turn the headlight switch then **** around with my wiring!
Works a charm and is lined up perfectly, the bottom of the screen shows the tow bar which is perfect!

Each to their own I suppose , seems like a bit of phaffing around to get the camera on when a simple rewire would do it hands free !! As for the trigger wire its just a single wire at the back of the tail light which goes 12v when reverse is selected . I am surprised you also have to tap the screen to get the camera vision what brand radio unit is it out of curiosity ?

Hmm, still needs to connect to the globe, so does it really matter which globe? I’d use the reverse light globe and no screen tapping.Performance Tunes from $850Wrecking RS OCTAVIA 2 Link

Haven't updated in a while.
Reverse camera is in and working fine. I'll wire the trigger wire up down the track. Just cbf running more wires.
Quick question though.
I've cut some new 3mm ply for new trim panels. I want to know what screws are people using to install new panels that look nice and do the job? I don't want to drill all new holes to use the OEM clips, so what are some good looking screws to go through the ply and self tap into the metal underneath?

Plenty of self tappers at Bunnings will self drill into the side metal as its fairly thin, are you painting the new trims or covering them with some sort of trim . Consider using stainless cup washers for a neater finish or there are some special cover cups which you put half under the screw and then a small button shape cup clips over to cover the screw .

The trim pieces are going to be left as the ply (it has a nice fake timber finish to it).
But I am going to be carpeting all the bare metal in the van eventually too. So carpeted metal, screwing in timber finished ply panels

I am going to presume your coverng the metal parts in an automotive stretch carpet , what you have to be very careful with is when you start putting screws through the carpet will get wound up in a tight ball so make sure you create a small hole before putting the screws through or it will rip the carpet in around each screw .
