  • Noisy T5.1 2.5TDI Engine

    Gday all,

My wife and I have recently purchased a 2006 Multivan Comfortline. We got it for a great price as it needs some work to get it back on the road. Well I hope we got it for a great price anyway. Time will tell. Most of the issues are cosmetic or door and sunroof related which we are working through. But the one issue I’m not sure about is the engine is a bit noisey. It is overdue for a service and has been sitting, not driven for a few months, but I checked the books and it has been pretty well serviced it’s whole life and it drives really great. Plenty of punch and everything feels very solid. I’m just not sure what the noise is. It’s not horrible, it’s not a knocking noise or whining noise. It’s not a really bad tapping noise or anything like that. It’s just noisey. Lol I haven’t driven it that much as it’s not registered or roadworthy at the moment but I did notice it’s more noticeable on idle and low revs.

I know it’s hard to be an internet mechanic and determine issues from words and videos but I was just wondering if anyone has had the same issue or know of the common issues. I’ve done some reading and research but I’m not sure. I can post the video if anyone would like. It’s not the greatest but might give some idea. I’m just trying to get my head around what it may be and what sort of costs may be involved before I head to the mechanic. I’m hoping it will just be a big service and changing oils and lubes as to me that’s all it sounds like but fingers crossed it’s nothing major with the costs.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I’m a huge fan of the VW’s and the van already. I own a pretty tough looking Amarok 😏 And the van will be converted into a camper 😁

Might be worth checking Air Con compressor , ours developed a tappping noise and I suspected a cam shaft problem which the 2.5,s were known for if the wrong oil was used . Anyway it turned out to be a bearing in the Air Con had failed strangely in the process the mounting braket broke for the air con broke as well , probably form the vibrations maybe . Good luck with the diagnosis . What sort of problem are you having with the sunroof I run a sunroof repair and install business here in Brissie so I may be able to help there .

Before you jump into any expensive repair/diagnostic procedure put some fresh BP diesel in it and change engine oil, oil filter. You could also get the oil sample (of old oil) analysed to know the condition of your camshaft lobes.
Do you have the DPF in your van?

Manual or auto? If manual and it goes away with the clutch pressed...input shaft bearing on the gearbox.

I’m pretty sure there is dpf. It’s an auto btw. Apparently the transmission has been reconditioned recently *♂️

Sunroof is pretty well sorted now. Just wouldn’t shut all the way and seemed like it wasn’t popping up as it should. So completely pulled it apart and found something that may have been jamming it in the rails and got it shut correctly now but had to do it manually. It seems as though the motor doesn’t know it’s boundaries now

Where abouts do you get the oil tested?

Gday all. Thanks to those who replied to my initial post. I had it in at my local trusted mechanics this week getting a roadworthy certificate and I asked them to take a look at the noise. Turns out it is something to do with the a/c compressor. This is not a job that he does so I was hoping to find out what other people have paid to have this fixed? Cheers

When or AC compressor died it was a $20 bearing , but VW would not repair it as these days they only want o fit whole components so to fix a $20 bearing cost us $1600 . Now that did include the mounting bracket as it had broken because of the bearing failure {don,t ask me as I don,t know why it broke as well } Okay just did a quick EBay search and found a mob in Victoria selling whole compressors new for under $500 naturally you would have to get the system regassed .Air Con AC Compressor fits VW Transporter T5 2.5L Diesel AXE 01/04 - 12/10 | eBay
