Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Aitonatics was a weak link on these but you wouldn’t have that concern, with regular service intervals and low 100 Kaye’s it should be worry free, automatic non 4wd transmission oil change every 50-60 km, if transmission and diffs not had oil change it is time now at 100 kays
Check for water leak mark below water pump, for peace of mind get the pump replaced regardless and check wear on timing gear whiles pumps out,

As the 128KW T5 engine was gear driven timing I would not imagine it would be a critical thing like the timing belts on most other models .

The timing gears should never wear out in these engines, they’re part of the engine block and we’re not sold seperate. That was very tough engine and VW should keep it, the 2.0L TDI is just too small no mater how much power they want to pump out of it.

Hear hear Transporter , I have been shouting this from the rooftops for years . Todays batch of commercials utes vans etc are woefully underpowered when loaded up . I saw a few years back a report on the new T6 and the reviewer categorically stated that he doubted a certain model of the T6 would have enough power to do its job properly . Then today look at all these dual cab utes , at least the Amarok has a 6 pot engine available but most of the others still stick with 4 pots or 5 pot jobs . Personally Ford Australai should hang their head in shame at sticking a 4 pot engine in the Ranger model and then insult the yanks by calling it a Raptor . Most of these dual cab jobs are saddled with small capacity engines which are reliant of being force fed through turbos . End Rant !!

I agree i took an amarok v6 tdi for a weekend and wow.
Even had a chat to my tuner and they get them moving 0-100 in a tad under six seconds.
So to sum it up everyone agrees it should hopefully give me worry free driving for a while?

manual t5, check for dual mass flywheel probs. Can be expensive if they part ways.
there is a check, to feel/listen for shuddering/noise reversing up a slope, i think.
Someone with a manual T5 care to add the correct procedure?

No arguement, just stating the obvious, to inspect the timing gear if replacing water pump,

Yes my old 2005 T5 is a 4 pot manual petrol , I replaced the clutch kit around 6 years ago but did not know about the Dual Mass Flywheel so it was left undone . Now the DMF had been buggered since around the two year old mark , I did the clutch around 5 years later and the DMF is still in there shudders like hell reversing up slopes . I have learnt never to drive into a place that i might have to reverse out of so I back in instead .

                        Thanks everyone for your help.
The dmf i’ve heard is expensive but it’s a wear and tear thing i guess and apparently problems or fast wearing brakes are quite common

You should get 40,000km out of the brakes.
