Hello everyone, I have a failed clutch in my 2014 2 Litre Bi-Turbo 4MOTION Transporter. Wondering if anybody knows of a heavy duty clutch for this model. My mechanic can’t find anything heavy duty from his suppliers.
Are you sure it's the clutch and not the flywheel?
I assume it’s the clutch, was driving home from Brisbane (I live near Rockhampton) with about 160km to go, I slowed in a passing lane to let a truck pass and when I pulled out the engine revved away with no forward motion, except for momentum. I backed off and it seemed to take up and I carefully made my way home. The smell of what I assume was burning clutch when I got home lasted for more than 2 hours. The same smell I get when I’m reversing my trailer up a rise slipping the clutch. I miss the G and low reverse gear of the T3 syncro I had...
Why do you think you need a heavy duty one?
I was hoping a heavy duty one may last a bit longer.
Yeah.......if it's not making a rattling noise, it will be the clutch.
Problem is, just changing the clutch only is inviting a flywheel problem!
As for the clutch, the bi turbo probably loads it more (not sure if its the same as my single turbo) but I carry over a ton a lot for one or two hours and blew a flywheel before I wore the clutch out (about 300k).
I seem to be wearing out drive shafts more than anything.

No, no rattling noise, just the slip and smell. Yes I realise the DMF needs to be replaced at the same time. Only 80k, so I think the solution may be to give up reversing the trailer.
Some time back when I was asking about lower gearing on here for the T5 somebody did say, ‘just save up for a new clutch’!!! Looks like that time has come.
Geeze......at 80k you'd almost gamble a flywheel if the clutch only lasted that long.

Well the job has been done, clutch and DMF so I’m much lighter in the pocket. Sooo I will now be limiting/eliminating my trailer reversing up slopes and my 4 wheel driving.
Only 80k, so I think the solution may be to give up reversing the trailer.
By 80k, my neighbour's Nissan Navara had worn out 2 clutches. From memory around $3,500 a time. Same problem reversing a heavy trailer up a slope to his shed.
His solution was to sell his ute & buy an Isuzu with auto trans. So far it's all good.
Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.

If at all possible I’m going to try and hold onto my van. I have done the same thing and got myself an auto D-MAX and will only tow the trailer with the van when I know there will be no clutch slipping needed. Plus the Isuzu will do any 4WD trips. I tried to get Trakka to sell me the Seikel Torque and Trail gearing for the van but they refused so hence the D-MAX. Probably a more sensible solution in the long run anyway although I do love the T 5.
Isn,t it strange that the actual design of a cars drive train can lead to such an expensive repair , my T5 2005 model is a humble 2.0 litre manual petrol . Around 18 months after purchasing it I stopped on a moderate hill as I had driven past the house I was going to . I decided it was safer to reverse back around 20 metres as it was abusy road , now the van does not carry any real load as its mobile workshop so a small tool box small compressor and acouple of power tools . It was not possible to get the van to reverse smoothly and from that day to today it still shudders like hell on any reasonable incline in reverse . I did replace the actual clutch plate and throwout bearing but did not realise that the thing had a DMF . so 280 thousand kays later its still in there !! The old days of solid flywheels would mean you would slip the clutch a small amount and that would work , yes the clutch plate would get a bit more chewed off it but at least it could still go back wards for a long time after .
