left side lights not working after plugging into trailer

HI I plugged into a trailer that had a short in the side lights.
Since then no rear left or side light left front. That,s the side the trailer light plug taps into the loom
Samll 7.5amp fuse under ash tray seems to be for all the side lights and its good.
when ignition is off and indicator arm is set to left side (parking lights) they dont work on left but do on the right.
I have exposed where the trailer plug taps into and there is no power coming to the side light feed wire
2013 T5 LWB 4 motion diesel.
Any ideas.
I cant seem to locate where the relays are to check them.
Any advice appreciated.

I might suggest that you disconnect the battery for a short time , I read somewhere that each time the circuit is turned on it checks the system for a fault . Now as yours has had a fault is has logged it into the body control compter module . Discconecting it may clear the fault so the circuit may come back to life again , assuming you have fixed the fault in the trailer it should be all good again . Just double check your fuses as there are more for lighting than you think , there is a fuse guide at the top of the Forum page which should help .Mind you you have around 120 fuses to check thats only if its a top of range model .T5 ESSENTIALS (from September 2009), Fuses location,

Thanks I will try this.
SO just take off the positive terminal for 30 seconds and put it back?
will this cause me problems with radio and other settings?

Sunny I can thank you enough, disconnecting the battery worked.
You dont know how pleased this has made me,
This has been going on for a few weeks now, and I have half disassembled the entire van trying to find relays and a whole host of other things, sourcing fuse diagrams and wiring diagrams testing circuits.
Such a simple solution.

Hey thats what friends are there for , glad to have helped . I found this out myself about 15 years ago ,I fit sunroofs into cars and I had done an install into a Holden Astra at a local dealer . while refitting the sunvisor which has a courtesy light in it I accidently put a screw through a wire which was trapped our of sight behind the lining . So I fixed the wire put in new fuse and nothing no lights , in frustration I went through all the cars lighting to see if i missed something eventually I gave up and went home . Next morning I went back to the dealers and was talking to one of the workshop boys and I was asking him if I removed the battery would that help , he said he wasn,t sure but it couldn't hurt BINGO back came the lights so to this day removing ther battery can fix some of these glitches .I had a similar one with our first T5 van back in 2005 , we were coming back down over Cunninghams Gap after a weekend Moto Cross ride . it was raining and I got stuck behind a double B truck . So I engaged 3rd gear in the tiptronic auto so as to keep the van in aslow decent , once I had the chance to get past the truck I took off forgetting it was still in third . Once I realised it I flicked it back to drive mode and suddenly realised I had no power to accelerate properly , well I drove for around 20 km like this worried that it was going to come to a sceaming stop . Then I decided to pull over and turned the van off on restarting it came back to normal whew ! Its something these days with the can bus systems that electric faults will stay until all power is disconnected like rebooting a computer .Mechanical ones sometimes just require switching off and back on again .

I believe that the SOB who designed the cheat software previously wrote a number of I'll drive these owners mad routines.

Was driving one day when the indicators stopped & a quick check after I pulled over showed it was all lighting. Once I had pulled every freaking fuse I could find in two boards & checked them for continuity, I started the car & the problem had gone.

Yes I now recall some silly thing with my work van where for no known reason the cruise control and indicators stopped working both at the same time , stupid thing was the actual lights on the van where flashing but not the arrows on the dash .Turned it off and on again and all good again , yes those bloody Germans love to remind us that they can be sneaky .

If i remember correctly the left and the right tail lights work independently i found this out when i was wiring up the Trailer harness
that's why you need the 9 pin plug ,So could run off different fuses ?

I didn't fall for the VW original wiring for our 2012 T5 I was not paying VW over $600 for their harness and then have to pay to get it coded . I purchased a Hayman Reece kits for $120 works because it uses relay for each circuit therefore it can bypass upsetting the Can Bus and you can then use LED lights on the trailer as well .
