What about swapping the engine and box out. Is the box connected to the rear Diff or does the drive go through a separate transfer case (???) type of setup?
Flush the cooling system, using good radiator flush, refill with the fresh coolant and put 1 PermOseal in the reservoir once warmed up and run engine for 30 minutes after thermostat opened.
Is there a site that tells you the compatibility between engines and boxes?

Just tried looking into this now.
Part numbers are all over the place, with regards to what is compatible, and what isn't. Part numbers for long motors are all different between Amarok, T5GP, and Passat, even though in theory they're all pretty much the same generation TDICR motor.
Wreckers over here are taking the pi$$ on prices. Can get a rebuilt one out of the UK, for circa $5K. A Used one here, is twice that amount, and you'd still have to pay someone to swap the whole lot over.
