  • Polo 6N 1.6 Mods n tweaks

    Hi all!

Ok so I'm quite new to VWs, but recently purchased a '97 VW Polo 6N 1.6 (i think its a CL model as it has central-locking) and wanted to do a few mods to it.

I found quite a few things on eBay and wanted to check if these are worth doing and if the parts I've picked would be compatible.

    - 6N2 Rear lights on 6N (I've seen a guide online for this, anyone personally done this here? part of ebay: Rear Lights link here)

    - Clear indicators and repeaters (Getting the Haynes workshop manual so I'd assume this is pretty painless, once again anyone had experience doing this? ebay links: Repeaters link here and Indicators link here)

    - Exhaust (CAT back worth it? this is one I'd like to get locally, but willing to import: Exhaust link here )

Hope you all can help, very much value your suggestions and experience!

Also would be looking at some rims.. Would 14" be the way to go? (Options/suggestions?) And is it worth lowering the car? (does this improve handling much, seems as though theres quite a bit of body-roll happening atm)

    Cheers!

Good to see someone else modifying the 6n.

I have similar plans for my GFs as you in regards to the lighting (all red tails, clear front and sides)

Im yet to do them but it seems easy enough. Check link in my signature for the polo to see what happened when I tried to be a tight arse and fit mk4 bora parts.

we have 14s on atm and it looks a little small still, so i think 15s are the way to go.
we also have shocking body roll. Golfman on here had a 6n back in the day and put 60mm weitech springs in from memory, car use to handle amazing according to him.

I looked at sway bars as my gf doesnt want to lose any of the comfort, but they are sooo expensive and im yet to find any second hand in aus.

keep us updated with what you do!

I cut down my springs - yes, I know everyone says you shouldn't do that but I did it years ago and it hasn't fallen apart or killed anyone. I lowered the car by about 50 mm allround and it makes a great difference to the handling. I highly recommend it.

I also removed the end of the air intake where it houses the valve that adjusts the air - hot air from above the exhaust or cold air from the front of the car. The valve is very restrictive and I think I gained a little bit more power.

My car has 14's with 185/60/14 tyres which suit the car and help the handling. I can throw it into corners and roundabouts and it is a million times better than standard.

      Cheers

when I had my 6n the first mods I did were Weitec springs an sticky rubber. That thing was an absolute blast to chuck around corners.

The only unfortunate thing about the 6n is the engine. The single point injected 1.6 is a bit weezy and really doesn't lend itself to tuning. A cat back will help it breathe a little better but I doubt you'll get that much gain. May sound cool though!

In that case I'd chuck some coilovers on first. They're a cool little car and I forever regret selling mine

I removed that diverter flap as well.

I even ditched the stock air filter, and fitted a filter sock over the hose that the flap attaches to.

Mine's running steelies off a MK3 Golf at the moment.
