You might manage slower, standard Jap imports and older standard V8s.

But anything that has a few mods to it will demolish a chipped polo.

If you've had experience otherwise you might not have been racing someone who can drive.

Turbo jap imports and LSx commodores respond just as well to mods as the polo does.

In many cases it comes down to 2 things to give a Polo an edge it may not normally have .......

      1. The way it makes its power and where it makes max torque... At 3000 rmin a chipped Polo makes max torque and pulls like a steam train.

Most V8s do not make sufficient torque at low revs to be able to stay close and will only start hauling in a chipped Polo (if at all) at higher revs. Mostly at this time illegal speeds are approached and its too late ....

The same (or similar) goes for modified Jap imports. They mostly have big turbos that make mega power (much more than a chipped Polo) at high revs and suffers from terrible lag down low. By the time they hit max power its too late as the Polo is quite a way in front already.

Both will likely catch you but it will take some time that they may not have.

      2. Most other drivers (include all supposedly fast cars here) do not realise what a lightly modded Polo can do and do not give it all initially. By the time they realise that a halfhearted stab at the throttle is not going to do it, its too late and the Polo is gone ....

TIP .... if the car next to you is a modified Jap and/or V8 ....etc .... and it is obviously revving hard at the start, odds are its going to be very close as the driver (maybe met up with a modded Polo already) knows he is at a disadvantage down low in the rev range and is trying to level the playing field.

These 2 things are the biggest contributors (IMHO) to the Polo's giant killing potential and if exploited well makes it punch above its fighting weight.

        In addition ....

It is not all down to power and weight of the Polo vs all others.....

It is how you use what you have got that makes the difference...

geez you just can't let it go can you... and FYI

          2005 CV8 Monaro - 0-100km/h 6.5 (not old)
          2004 VY SS - 0-100km/h 6.5 (not old)
          2000 S15 Silvia - 0-100km/h 7.1 (AFAIK) (not considered a 'slow' car)
2001 Subaru WRX - 0-100km/h 6.2 (definitely not considered a 'slow' car) - anything from 2003 onwards pulls a 5.7 or thereabouts, which we aren't far off the mark, being a ~6.1sec.

older imports like the S13 silvia or 180sx, even with minor mods, will get dusted. same goes for cars like the VR SS, old XR8's etc.....no competition at all.

you obviously have an issue with the chipped Polo GTI being a quick car.

as i said earlier, i'm not referring to every V8 and turbo import on the road. and yes i'm referring to standard cars because this is what we are talking about, 'the chipped Polo vs. others', and how good our bang for our buck is (especially for a reasonably new car of good quality that is still under warranty).

I'm confused, what sort of 0-100 time could i expect with a remap. given that the published stock is 6.9.

            Cheers

not too sure about the Golf MKV GTI, you'll have to check with the boys in the MKV section for that one. and also, isn't the stock 0-100km/h claimed at 7.2 for the MKV GTI.

8.3 seconds......geez, that would seem like a lifetime.

in reality its not that bad compared to majority of cars on the road, but for $1,500, why not cut a few seconds off that and be a lot better than not that bad

One important thing that a lot of people seem to forget is rpm . At what rpm is peak torque and peak power . You'll find cars like the honda s2000 have peak torque around 5000 rpm and peak power around 8000 rpm . Without the right gear ratio's it could take forever to get there , where as VW has always had peak torque fairly low and fairly flat ( 2000-4000 rpm ) , and power fairly low as well (around 6000) .

As for racing against v8's and Jap cars , if you ever go to the drags you'll notice most are running 11's and 12's , so you dont stand a chance in the top end , but you may get the 0-60 or even 0-100 if you catch them napping . Anyone got some timeslips of a chipped polo they can post up ?

for those of you that have a chipped polo, can you make any remarks on the actual noise of the chipped polo?

i.e. did chipping the polo change the sound of the exhaust note or anything else? (spooling etc)

                                cheers!
