Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

What is causing this noise? It's not a problem, I'm just curious.

If you get into your car and turn the accessories/auxillary on, you'll hear the noise. My first thought was the fuel pump. But yesterday, when I was cleaning my car, I had both doors open and the key was in the ignition but everything was off, I heard the same noise. WTF? Can't be the fuel pump if it's not on. Then again this morning, I walked out to my car, beeped open the door and as soon as I opened the door, I heard the noise again.

Same noise, three varying times. It appears to be random. Any ideas what it could be?

could be the air vents opening up.
next time you start your car... put it in reverse and see if the same noise happens again (blocks fumes from coming in the car when reversing). then put back to neutral and listen again. if you hear the same noise it may be the air vents opening/closing up. i'm pretty sure they close up when you lock the car.

apart from that it could be the start up process: AFAIK from when you open the door after unlocking the car goes through its own start-up with fuel pumps and other things. when you open the door something starts up, and then when you put the key in and turn to auxilliary, something else starts up. gets the little beastie all ready to go before even turning the ignition on. pretty cool IMO

Yep ... fuel pump. There's a time lag involved. If you open the door immediately after getting back (from a drive) ... it doesn't do it. I don't how long the actual delay is, but after a certain time, opening the door activates the fuel pump to charge.

If a fuel pump makes a sound but no body is around to hear it, does it really make a sound?

i think its about 10mins or so. i have been told it activates itself once the water pump in the engine shuts off (after a drive). and yes, you can hear that too max croft! when you turn off the car and get out, have a listen to the bonnet.....WOOOOOOOWW!

                      its a clever little monkey!
