Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

I'm going to go ahead and remove all the air con gear in the car. It hasn't been re gassed in 4 years and I don't intend on doing it either. Its all just dead weight mostly on the heaviest corner of the car so its coming out. I've looked around on the web but I can't seem to find shorter A/C delete ancillaries belts. Does anyone who has done this know if there are shorter belts that are available and if that's all I really have to worry about with this mod?

    thanks
    sam

Measure around the pulleys and miss out the AC and then look on line for a belt of the appropriate length.

Is that just a matter of removing the compressor and sorting a shorter belt? Leaving the radiator and pipes in?

Not if you wanna do it properly, if all you are doing is pulling the few pipes out and a compressor you may as well leave it in. Condensor and evap need to be taken out also, one of which is a dash out job.

I was mainly hoping to remove the compressor and the condenser (that's the AC radiator in front of the radiator isn't it) - just the heavy stuff at the front of the car. There must be 20+kg of dead weight there out over the front wheels that I have no use for + I assume I'd get better airflow through the radiator with the codensor removed. If possible the pipe work can stay in so that I can reinstall it down the track before/if ever I sell it. Beside the radiator there are some AC hard pipes that use compression fittings held in by circlips that if I separate might allow me to remove the condenser neatly. That's what I was hoping for anyway.

Not worth the hassle mate, compressor is at most 5kg; condensor maybe another 2kg?

Go for a jog and take a decent dump before you go track, same same.

only 5kg for the compressor yeah? I thought it'd be heavier than that. The compressor has a clutch system or is it always a draw on the crank?

I have removed the compressor and condenser and piping from my engine bay, dont want it on my new engine, it looks horrid

I will be searching for a new belt also. Was told to do what gav said, measure and go to supercheap or somewhere and look for the right length ribbed belt

Got a weight figure from what you removed? Yeah i'll source the belt at least so I have it. I'd thought that maybe there were 1.8T's in something that had no air con and that there might be an off the shelf VAG belt but if I can find one at repco/supercheap etc then even better.

Hmm I put all the parts off into storage where i never go, didnt weight them

Im guessing the compressor is about 10kg (quite heavy) , condenser would be another 3kg, lines another 1kg

ID:	1826201anyone have experience seperating these AC fittings. There seems to be a circlip inside but also a little pin that has popped up into the outer housing.

I managed to source a generic dayco belt. If it all fits i'll passn on the part number.

                        Hoyhoy.

Well I have found the Air conditioning to come in very handy mainly to turn on the twin cooling fans on the cool down lap & when entering back into the pits.
                        It makes a big difference..........

yeah I remember you bringing that up a while back, so I'm going to wire onto the plug side of the pressure switch and use that circuit to directly switch the fans on/off via a toggle switch - that's assuming I can neatly get the compressor and core separated from the hardpipes which I think I'll be able to do if I can get them to come apart at the above compression fittings.

stuffed around more or less all day and luckily could return my first attempt at a shorter AC delete ancillaries belt. The one that fits is a Dayco poly-rib 6PK0940 370K6. The "940" suffix means 940mm and the "6" means 6 ribs. Its 21mm wide. The tensioner sits slightly less advanced than with the standard belt and compressor fitted but it is easily within the tensioners operating range aok. Had a blackout which has held me up tonight so I might just see if I can get the compressor out from underneath for now and save the condenser core etc (whole front off the car) for a more motivated night.

The pressure sensor looks to be a 3 pin. the pressure sensor gives a variable range ohms reading I think so its not as easy as just bridging 2 wires to give yourself radiator fan control. will have to look into that one a little more.

I had a problem with my radiator a while ago and needed to run the aircon to cool the car, since upgrading to an aftermarket MK4 Mishimoto, i no longer have that problem and the temp hardly moves
