Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled
After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.
Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before.
We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

K&N Air filter out of the box?

So it's a K&N Pod filter then...
These things are not legal by ADR, but lots of people run them anyway. To get the most out of it you want to get some sort of heat shield in there too.
Really might want to consider the alternative CAI kits like the BMC CDA (or the cheap DRiFT rip off I have) I know there is other brands too, have a hunt for an option you like. In short it's basically a pod in a tube with a cold air feed so you get the best of both worlds.

If its for the current 9n shape GTI that pod filter he denoted is useless. There are several problems...
1. The pipe is of the wrong angle and wrong length - it wont fit properly.
2. There is no cool air feed going to it - so heat soak will render it more ineffective than the stock box. Only thing you'll get is a louder exhaust note.
3. The location of the pod doesnt recieve sufficient atmospheric pressure, thus having an adverse effect (Courtesy of an article that Dave Mack posted in the Interesting Articles section).
Overcome these problems you'll get something effectiveOnly things that have been proven to work have been the SEAT intake modification with the K & N filter or the BMC CDA. However, the BMC CDA requires an Odessey dry cell battery modification which isnt very cheap.
I custom made my own CAI intake after about 2 weeks of R & D'ing and previous prototypes then tested under similar conditions. But then again, my engine position setup is different from the GTI's.GTI|BBS|Forge|Whiteline|Custom CAI+K&N|Sparco|Toyo|Martini|JVC|Focal|ScanGaugeII
