Ran down to Thredbo after christmas and spent a few days driving around (Alpine Way to Khankoban, etc) all up 1500km and averaged 5.9 L/100km for the trip ... pretty happy with that, as it's hard to drive the Alpine Way economically ... too much fun to be had

      Hi all,

thought I'd butt in - on freeways and highways my GTI does down to 6.5L/100kms.... around town given time I average 8L/100km.... and I'm meant to be a crazy psycho driver. What do you people do????? Floor it every 5 seconds????

maybe im just posting the obvious here but with my previous cars (they were very very gutless) i relied on 5th gear to keep half decent speed. though since ive had my gti ive noticed it can do these speeds comfortably in 4th and evan 3rd. however ive noticed in my car (not sure its the same for you guys) to get half decent fuel economy its esential to either a / do alot of highway running or b use 5th gear alot regardless of weather your po po can do it in a lower gear, for instance using 5th to putt around on 70kms/hr yields fantastic fuel economy.
