At my first service I mentioned the gearbox was occasionally crunching 1st->2nd and they replaced the oil. I thought it was a strange thing to do, but to be honest I haven't noticed it happening since....

Fix was drain the oil and fill with 2 litres of Redline MTl which has poly and has SUPERB friction properties. I did this to the Polo Gti in question and ran the vehicle for about 50ks and after that the thing was quiete and was shifting VERY smooth. No crunching up or down the box. Again an old fix proves to be one of the best.
I thoroughly recommend you try this if you are having any issues with your Polo Gearbox.

Interesting.. My TDI Caddy van has started crunching 1st to 2nd above 3000rpm when the box oil heats up.. Really bad when you are on a trip and the oil thins out.

I've been meaning to ring for a couple of months, but haven't had a chance. I was thinking it would be a syncro on the way out. But G'box oil is something i hadn't thought of. I'll give the dealer a call tomorrow..

No phone call but I had mine in a few weeks ago for another issue and they mentioned a recall and changed the oil. They were surprised I hadn't received a letter from VW. I've never had a problem with the gearbox BTW.

When my car had its service, they carried out a recall campaign '35A7'. On the bottom of the invoice, it states that oil was used as part of the recall. So if you want to be specific, mention this code as I am certain that this is the recall for gearbox oil.

              Hope this helps

                    Interesting.

I'm due to pick up my new Polo next week. What are everyone's thoughts regarding getting them to "recall" it before I pick it up?

I got this done about a month ago. Actually, I asked the dealer to flush gearbox oil and replace. They must have found out there was updated transmission oil. Replaced with that. But I had to pay for it, as they did not know about the recall. I only paid for oil itself as I was complaining about the diff noise of the gearbox.

After new oil, I think the noise is actually slightly louder, but smoother to shift. Never had crunching gears before anyway.

Apparently, the oil has gone from synthethic to mineral. I know it sounds like a backward technology, but apparently works better for this gearbox.

I am guessing the recall would apply up to a certain VIN number after which the new gearbox oil would have been placed in the production lineup. Check with your dealer before you pick it up.

Dropped mine off for 15k service this morning and they said Recall work would be carried out on it but didnt actually know what it was haha

He mentioned the same Recall ID as what has been said here. I have to say that the gearbox has felt a bit crunchy in the past month or so. Lets hope no damage is done.

My dealer said it was an ECU upgrade , but as can be seen on the link above it definitely is the gearbox oil.

I got told at my first service a month back about the recall. They booked it in and did it a week or so later. It's an oil change and a few other small things.

i've had recall 35A7 done last month, plus you get a sticker put near the drivers side door. I'm happy if VW knows there is a problem with the box as i'm already on my second. By the way its dificult to take a good photo when its so overcast in Brisbane today.
