  • Polo GTI Recall

"VW know that the gearbox is weak. I reckon they'd replace at the minimum one a week worldwide. There's a recall on them in the UK and Germany. Which involves a change of oil..."

Well, I just had a call from Sonny at Highway VW - "Need your Polo GTI ASAP - gotta change the gearbox oil - how's Mon or Tue for you?"

    Am I the first?

Yeah it's an offical recall apparently - I was in there yesterday having an emmissions diverter valve (or something that sounded like that) replaced under warranty - he rang today to make sure all was ok and said that there is an official recall - needs the Polo ASAP. I told him I knew there was 'issues' with the GTI gearbox - he was a bit silent about that

Would have been great if he could have done the gear box oil while I sat there for 2 hours yesterday - but I'll cut hm the benefit of the doubt and believe that it was only announced today........

I've also developed the dreaded 1-2nd gearbox crunch What I've noticed is that it only occurs once everything has warmed up properly, ie engine/gearbox oils are at peak temps. I'm making an assumption here, but VW engineers have possibly determined that the std grade gear box oil isn't up to the job of protecting the synchros at high temps, hence the crunch (and possible damage incurred as well).

There may have been a recall in some countries, but that hasn't occured here (yet). For those who are experiencing the crunch, they may need a diagnostic to determine if there's existing damage. For others, it may be a good idea to request the new gear box oil as a preventative measure at your next service.

Mine's going in next week so I'll report back. Best we keep cool heads for now and see what transpires

            Lol I'm good.

Interesting that they are calling you all. The recall in the UK only happened if you called up about it or if your car was at the dealer for a service.

Maybe our hotter weather is causing problems?

Let's not get carried away here ... so far, Pete seems to be the only one called up about gearbox oil. That doesn't shout "General Polo GTI Recall" to me.

1st fix: apparently a recall by VW for putting the wrong gearbox fluid in vehicle. changed fluid.(This did not work)

2nd fix: Full replacement of second gear after having to replicate the noise with one of the mechanics in the car.

Will be interesting to see how this goes, i am still running it in, so will report back on it later. This was all done under warranty.
He's not the first person to claim there's a recall though.

If it'll put your mind at rest ... I think you should. I've never had a g'box problem in 2.5 years with mine ... so ... up to you.

I believe this is where you'll want to look - http://dynamic.infrastructure.gov.au...&category=Cars

Nothing there though, might mention it when I'm at VW on Tues.

I would. It's free and might save you the trouble of not having your baby for a week.

Guys and gals!! I had a Gti Present with a gearbox fault to the point i thOught it was going to need syncros. Crunching every shift. Suspect syncro hub / baulk ring failure. Had a ponder and remembered an old fix on the 02A gearboxes , which is a cable shift similar to the Polo. Now i had a few Cupras with the ABF unit and 02a box doing the same. Fix was drain the oil and fill with 2 litres of Redline MTl which has poly and has SUPERB friction properties. I did this to the Polo Gti in question and ran the vehicle for about 50ks and after that the thing was quiete and was shifting VERY smooth. No crunching up or down the box. Again an old fix proves to be one of the best.
I thoroughly recommend you try this if you are having any issues with your Polo Gearbox.
