Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • iPad dash install

Just wanted to share my progress with my dash install.. I Was considering a new head unit until I remembered I have an old iPad sitting around that doesn't get used. I moulded the iPad with fibreglass and moulded into the dash.. I will block the air vents that I lost and I'm moulding the switches for hazards ect. Into the panel below the heater controls.. I'm buying a Bluetooth amp that the iPad will pair with and the iPad will use my phones hotspot as a connection for Storify and pandora.. I also have a Bluetooth obd2 dongle so I should be able to use apps like torque to display gauges with temps and track launch times and all that other stuff.. In my opinion it's way better than any head unit I could of bought. I know some will disagree but hey, it's my car in the end...
I'll try upload some pics now..

This is where I'm at now, got some more smoothing to do and I want to sharpen the edges up on the bit around the iPad.
Then I'll prime it and spray it in 2k gloss black.

Sorry about the crappy quality of the pics, I bought a new iPhone 6 and the camera has never focused properly :/

this looks like it'd be great once all done!

are you going to put the charger cable in there somewhere too? where will you put the buttons previously located in that spot?

good luck with the rest of the fab.

I know! The camera drives me nuts [emoji33]

Im going to put the switches and the little Bluetooth interface just under the heater controls where it steps back behind the gear shifter.. I'll try find a pick of the interface. It looks pretty nice. It's similar to this one.. I originally wanted this one but it's only 2 channel..

Oh, and I was going to put the charger cable in there but this is an iPad 2 with the old charger so I probably won't bother until I get a newer model with the lighting cable..

Just got a bit of primer on. Showed up some pin holes and stuff that I can now fill. Hopefully get some paint on during the week and I'll line the iPad part with some sort of material or do it in plastidip so it's not so hard on the iPad
