Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Recurring P0116 DTC- any experience?

Hi poger's! My 2007 gti has a P0116 code which has come up a few times now; seems it's every few weeks, and usually when I'm driving sedately.
I've replaced the ECT sensor as a matter of course, but it's just come back. Apparently the other common causes are old and rusty coolant, or dodgy wiring/connections. My coolant generally seems in reasonable condition, so was just wondering if anyone has had this problem and can suggest where on the wiring to look for issues?
Also, I've reset the fault code, just just wondering if anyone knows if there's a finite limit to how many times you can clear fault codes on the Polo ECU? I know some ECU's need to be factory reset after a certain number of fault clearances.
    Any help greatly appreciated!!
    Cheers, Steve

That's good to know; at least I don't need to be in a hurry to find the source, especially since it doesn't cause any dramas and the reset is free and quick!
