Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Boostcut Issue when hitting full boost

    Hey guys,

First post here - running a near stock 08 GTI with the usual - APR tune/Pod/ everything else stock.

Been running like a dream - however last friday night - a sv6 drove past me so I dropped in down into second - went up to 16psi as usual then made a spluttering noise, only way to describe it would be a DSG changing gear. Then drops all boost.

Car is running perfectly otherwise, only when you load it up and it hits full boost that it does this.

Not as familiar with engines as you guys - but learning as I go along.

Any tips on where I should look first? Waste gate actuator? - I know this is in the worst place to look, in the very back.. How have you got to this - have you had to move pipes around to get back here?

    Thanks,

    J

Sounds like a coil pack. Get it scanned and come back with the results. No point in guessing. Gavin

Live monitoring & graphing of the engine with latest full version of VCDS as you hit boost will identify what's happening. If you're in Sydney, I provide that service. PM me

As Gav said, definitely scan it to be sure before you go ahead and buy any parts or pulling things apart but it does sound like a bad coilpack. One of mine died recently and sounded like a wrx hitting redline when I hit 10psi

That didn't show up on a scan though, had to swap each coilpack out for a good one, take it for a spin, if it's not fixed go on to the next one. Got to my 3rd pack and found the issue. Scan first though to be sure it's not something else.

An error scan may not pick up that sort of failure, but monitoring & graphing for knock and unburnt fuel would without trial & error

Yep - Pretty much. Very prominent in first gear - make all the wrx guys jealous!

Anyone happen to have a spare coilpack in melb I could borrow to test out?
