I suspect it makes very little difference. Had a good look at the feed of air to it, the size if the IC, spoke to a number of people and decided to rather do it properly and fit a FMIC.

It's simple, and easy to DIY. Who knows if it adds up to much, but a FMIC is not on my list, for weight and other reasons, so this is a bit of fun to do.

I agree with Timbo. Yes FMIC is the better choice, but I am not willing to folk out that much money. To be honest, I am happy with the performance of my car. Just want to optimise it further that's all.
Just waiting for my holiday in a week time to install it.
06 Polo GTI - REVO Stage 2 = 140kw @ wheels.
06 Golf GTI - Bluefin Stage 1 blacked out with ED30 theme, leather, xenon, etc.
I did this exact mod on my Golf, I would recommend trying the 'cut and heat gun' to make the vent as you will need to reapply black spray paint every few months as the crap coming off the wheel strips the paint.
Permanent removal of the liner is not a good idea as the cooler will fillup with crap.

It's a worthy mod and a cheap and easy way to get better flow over your intercooler. It comes standard on the S3 to help cool it's 2 SMIC's - obviously it runs more boost = extra heat. If you have chipped your 1.8T, I'd highly recomend doing it.
