Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Just wondering how many of you have changed timing belts recently and can offer an opinion on brands to use and overall cost.

My pog is due now (2007 with 65,000k's). On my last car (VTEC prelude) it only cost me $480...but I've heard upwards of $800. If i had more skills/tools/time I'd attempt it myself but that ain't gonna happen.

    Any advice is welcome!

My last Polo I had cost me $700 for the timing belt and water pump fitted which I thought was pretty reasonable based on the other quotes I had around that time. I would've attempted it myself if I had a a place to have it up on stands for the day at the time but unfortunately didn't.

Timing belt kit is between 3-400. I forget exactly what I paid for the last one.

It's a pretty involved job but not impossible to DIY.

No waterpump there Dan, an essential part to replace.

I'll call Imparts later and let you know what they want.

Plus one on the group buy idea if that goes forward. I was thinking of doing mine in the next month or so anyway.

not sure if i'll end up taking you up on it, but that's really nice of you to offer.

been looking at one blokes on-line guide - and it looks like a pretty full on job.

Thanks Gav too for the parts sourcing

                            Great offer indeed!

This guide may be worth a read, if you haven't already done so...
