  • Normal so many things go wrong worth fixing?

    Hi All,

I have a polo gti MY07 bought January 2007 current 118000 km's on the clock.

Here is a current list of issues with this car and I they have all happened within the last few months and I am wondering is this normal for so many things to go wrong just after it hit the 100k mark and do you think its worth fixing?

    1) ABS / ESP lights come on with codes 01201 / 01301 - havent had investigated yet but if its a new ABS control pump ive heard thats about 2K?

    2) Clutch slipping - gears crunch in reverse and 2nd some time when driving on highway and accelerate car sounds like its in neutral - houw much for that another $1200 or so?

    3) high pitch whistling noise like a jet engine on cold start - more than likely the aux pump dont know how much to fix?

    4) its nearly due for major 120K service and was told a water pump nearly done too and should be replaced at the same time and was quoted about $1K for this service

    5) needs 4 new tyres

What do you guys think is this normal for this car? have loved it but hate it now just everything breaking.
Is it worth spending the money on this or should I just cut my losses now and sell it? Looks like its about to be about 5k or more to get it back in ship shape. Have already replaced the front bushes and shocks costing far too money for a car this old

    Cheers

I will give you 3K for it.

    Gavin

    Seriously though,

Gearbox, probably be improved no end with fresh oil. 1 hour labour, $100 in oil.

Slipping clutch, if that's correct, 4 hours labour, plus clutch kit. Std is about $800-1000. An alternative one with solid flywheel would be about half that.

ABS pump, can't tell from your codes. But a scan with VCDS would be a better help. Unlikely to be the pump. If the ABS and ESP lights on it could be lots of things., all of which are cheaper than a pump.

Whistling is the Secondary air pump. I can fix that with a tune and SAI delete. So the fault light stays off. $900. No noise and a faster car to boot!!

A water pump should always be done with the belt. A kit is under $400. Another 3 hours labour.

Tyres are a running cost. So I don't think that's a downer, you need them on any car. $600 ish.

Thanks with the ABS i meant to say could be a new control module and what is a vcds scan and are they expensive? Ive gone as far as getting the codes but havent investigated further as my mechanic couldnt tell either what the problem would be and recommend to take it to an auto electrician. So is that the best advice go there and the vcds scan would tell whats broken? Just hesitant to invest any more money in the car and dont want to spend hundreds of dollars just to find out its going to cost thousands and not worth fixing. With regards to the gearbox was told the oil levels were fine when checked.

The whistling noise doesn't come with any warning lights and its been going on for more than a year without fixing.

It seems the most urgent thing to fix now is the clutch slipping? The abs and esp has been not working for months can live without it.

Yes tyres are a running cost but it just adds to the pile of money to be spent and what i havent mentioned is that im in serious financial difficulty at the moment which is why none of the things have been fixed and going to be hard to find the money any time soon to do it only the critical things one by one but by the time i might be able to afford each item the car could be worse due to letting them go.

In my situation i am thinking its better to do a trade with very little changeover and downgrade to a ****ter that i dont have to find 3000k+ in the next 6 months and can just drive with little problems. If i had 3k to spend i would much rather use it to pay back some bills...

Sounds like you should find a mech with more knowledge of VWs. There are a few in BNE.

If you sell / trade the car like it is you'll take a bath anyway so possibly try & fix things gradually or park the car & take public transport for a while until you get back on your feet? Do a budget, cut out the "nice to have" extras for a while. You can live on very little if you try really hard & simplify your life.

        1) Could be anything & Polos seem notorious for electrical issues caused by bad earths. might be simple, might not be. It needs a VCDS scan & someone that knows VWs.

        2) Start with the simple stuff like oil. Some of this stuff can be DIY'd if you have some mech-minded mates & tools.

        3) ??? Can you block the pump?

        4) Normal running costs isn't it? Again, find yourself a decent specialist independant rather than the local mechanic that "specialises in all makes" (how does that work?).

        5) 205/45r16? You'll get 4 Yumchas for $260 fitted. Toyo Proxes4 for $360 fitted. tyres wear out. It's your choice whether they wear quick or slow.

It's not the level its the kind of oil in the gearbox. Google crunching and polo.

VCDS is a better tool than the generic ones that lots of mechanics use.

If you can get to the airport, I'll scan it for you one evening. Saturday, sunday or next monday.

I would say of all the faults the clutch is the most likely to leave you stranded.

The pump is working, they just get noisier as they fail. Eventually when they stop pumping air. That's when the light will come on.

Thanks Gavin do you have a shop of your own? I can most definitely get to the airport I go there all the time for plane spotting.

With regards to the gearbox when it first started crunching I too thought it was because of oil because it has happened before and was replaced by VW but after my mechanic checked it they said the level is fine and said its only crunching in second gear a bit and reversed and suggested it might be related to the synchros or the clutch why its crunching. And a few weeks later the clutch starts slipping so I thought ok the clutch is the cause of the issue with the gears crunching so I need a new clutch

Tempe Tyres in Sydney but there are a few places in Brissy that do cheap tyres - Paradise Garage or Rainbow Garage (something like that). If you buy from Sydney then delivery is $60 & fitting will cost you $20/tyre - best buy local.

No mate, I am an Avionics Lame working for Panasonic. I am also the Australian Agent for Custom-Code.

If you come over just before I start a late shift, I can scan and advise you from there.

Get the oil changed, there's lots of threads about it. I have some Penrite oil in mine but most folk use Redline. There's was awful crunching in my box when I got the car. 50km with new Fluid and it's long been gone.

It is the syncros. Although I am not convinced the clutch has anything to do with it, if it is indeed slipping.

Thanks so much again Gavin. If you could please PM where to go and what time suits you I can pop over on Sunday and I really very grateful for this.

Ok I'll get the oil sorted. About the clutch slipping is that not the right term for it? I thought yeah when you put your foot down and the car sounds like its in neutral and then it kicks again that's called the clutch slipping? It is definitely happening at high speed like yesterday doing about 80 on the highway I think in 5th and then the traffic cleared so I accelerated to 100 still in same gear and at that point the engine drops as if its in neutral and then few seconds later accelerates again.

Do you have a hunch it could be something else perhaps less serious?

I don't like to speculate without seeing it but if the engine speed is increasing faster than road speed. It sounds like the clutch.

The oil needs to be synthetic and may take 100ks or so before it gets right into every part of the box.

0h four two four 32 double 5 92 1830 hrs at the Maccas close to the International terminal. Hopefully I'll be in my Red Polo, if not a Silver S3.

Have a read of my cheapy thread and see how actually, you aren't doing that bad.

Sounds like a slipping clutch. Depending on how you drive the car those km's aren't abnormal on a clutch. It's early life if you're gentle and just highway cruising, but if you drive hard, launch it lots or generally ride it from poor driving, than you've done well. Think of it like brakes, if you use it, you wear it. Just gotta factor that cost over the life of the item to take some of the pain away at replacement.

Ahh, OK, now I know what the odd fan like noises and groans are, especially at cold start time. Time to start thinking SAI delete for me too then.
