I have a 2006 Polo Gti which i bought from the owner in February.It has done bout 28000kms. Couple of weeks ago my temp started to light up in the mornings but when i turn the car off n switch it on again, it went away! so i thought maybe it was coz of the cold mornings. When i checked my coolant level, it was at the minimum level so i brought it in to the dealer at Rosehill for a refill since it was still under warranty.

The guy there rang me after a couple of hours and said that my car has been in accident(which i had no clue about) and that the coolant was replaced with the wrong one. They want to charge me $450 to drain n change everything!! I've rang the owner of the car before me and he said he was never in an accident!!

can someone plz tell me what to do? r these ppl at Rosehill tryin to rip me off or wat? any help will be appreciated!

Explain 'change everything'?

Ask them what coolant you should use then buy some and you can change the coolant yourself.

Or you might need a new raidiator as some have cracked and been replaced under warranty.

change everything as in to drain the original coolant out and fix the sensor or something. because a wrong coolant was used, it think it affected the temp sensor.

Check the service history on the car, and check the previous owner again. If neither indicate any previous work on the cooling system, as the dealer service manager to show you the evidence of the "accident"...unless he can do that, then I reckon they need to cover under warranty

Ask for a written quote of what they want to do. $450 sounds very steep to change the coolant.

The GTI will bring the warning light on if the coolant level is close to the minimum level. Mine was barely 1mm under the minimum level when my light starting lighting up. It seems to be a common issue and there has been a few threads on it here. For me it was simply a case of going to VW, buying a $20 bottle of the VW correct coolant, topping it up and problem solved.

Made me keep a close eye on the level but in 27 months of ownership of my car only had to top up once.

Hey, just my thought.

I think he(the service manager) is stringing you along. $450 is way too much to charge for coolant, sensor, and labor. Go and take it to another VW dealer, and only mention that the coolant light is on, and go from there. Shop around a bit. If the car has not been in an accident(which they have to prove), then the sensor is under warranty. Coolant is very cheap, and changing it is very easy(even reverse flushing), so $450 is hardly justified.

omg guyz u wont believe what they juz did...they changed the coolant without my permission!!! my last conversation was to ask him to call the dealer where the car was last serviced. i didnt hear anything from them, i tried calling like 4 times then finally smone tells me that the guy i was talkin to went home and the coolant has been chnaged!

took the rest of the day off and went to the dealer and demanded wat happened. apparently that guy just assumed i said yes n went ahead with the repairs. spoke to the manager and scored a free repair!

bad news is...they still think my car has been in an accident and they found another problem. something bout how the gear crunches. i read how some ppl had that problem with their cars..but the dealer ppl again think it was caused by an accident. guess i have to get a second opinion on that. any recommendations on which dealer in sydney that may be good?

hey to me it sounds like this dealer is trying to take you for a fool..
i think some dealers just try and take your money and others actually help out a lot.. my g/f has a polo and had a problem with the car starting and then stalling almost straight after.. they changed the coolant temp sensor and its been good apart from once ever since.. any1 else with the same problem??

anyways your original problem could have been that because the coolant level was a little low as you said and when it warms up the water expands and the level will rise.. this could be why the light went off..

I have had trouble with the Rosehill mob as well , i think it is best to stay away from them . i found liverpool to be very helpfull

Warning light is simply doing its job, could just be low, then a system pressure test is req to check if in fact any leaks. They do drop over a long period. If they have tested your car and found the sensor faulty then you dont have to replace the coolant if you keep your cap on when changing- the loss is minimal. If the wrong coolant has been filled so what, and so what if its been in an accident- if it is repaired to industry standard then all is well - then replace the coolant - but nothing i have read here should cost anywhere near $450, have an honest independent check your ride mate.

That service centre sounds crap.


Also regarding the gear crunches you should ask them why they were driving your car if it was in for a coolant flush....

And then tell them to ring VW in the UK and ask about the crunches. They released a service bulletin about the crunching and any polo that was getting it had to come back in to get the gearbox oil flushed and changed.
