So I emailed a VW dealer the other day re this issue to see what info they could provide.
Got an email back today saying it sounds like the issue is my lambda sensor aka oxygen sensor
Same as me. The car has just ticked over 100km.
The code is 16517 - Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor B1 S1. which means pre-cat 02 sensor.

Jmac (Jimmy) has ordered one for me, $160. I recall Gav saying about that price as I'd asked VW when I bought the strut tops and bearings last week, they quoted $288 for the pre-cat sensor and $311 for post-cat. They didn't know what B1 S1 meant, but further research confirmed that's pre-cat.

So latest car update is its in the shop.
Went in yesterday to the mechanic that replaced the temp sensor last time.
This time apparently the codes were saying that it was the temp sensor again. This time though the coolant sensor in the radiator.
So they are going to replace that and see how we go.
2006 POLO GTI -------RUS7Y-------Custom Cat Back + More to come
But he is really cheap and doesn't seem to be ripping me off.
Good news so far is that im seeing a lot more movement in my temp gauge with it rising and lowering at decent speeds.
If by this time next week I don't have the light back on im going to be one happy man

Ok so finally got my VAG COM cable to investigate the codes by muself
This is what I got:
1 Fault Found:
16500 - Engine Coolant Temp. Sensor (G62): Implausible Signal
P0116 - 35-00 - -
So the mechanic has already replaced the Coolant Temp Sensor. While doing it he did notice that my radiator was a lil shot.
He was going on about a plastic tube or something on the side of the radiator that looked worm and that there might not be enough flow getting past the sensor.
So looks like when I get him to do the major service inc timing belt we are going to send my radiator away to get flushed and tested.
I dont mind going to this guy as to date with all the times its been there hes only charged me 100 for both sensors, coolant and labor
You guys have any other ideas as to what it could be going of this code. It was the only code in the car as well

Clear that fault code and see if it comes back. It could be 5 years old.
