Stock system has a booster, aftermarket units tend not to.

Unfortunately, radio reception on the VW range leaves a lot to be desired. This is mainly to do with the antenna being built into the windscreen, and then the diversity bit.

I fitted an ANS-610 and I got a double Fakra plug that combined both the diversity antennae and the radio reception improved considerably.

It has to do with the antenna, but the problem being that to fit an aftermarket one may detract from the looks of the car. You can get adhesive ones that attach under the dashboard, but again, they are fiddly to install.

In years gone by, I have owned an original Mini, a Torana, a HiaceSBV, and even their most basic radios would allow me to listen to the radio without interruption on the way to Melbourne. Now, there are large areas where there is no signal that the antenna can pick up.

Didn't know that. That'd explain why my reception sucks. I don't bother trying to listen to radio, it's awful.

Wai:I'm interested in knowing more about your fix. You won't be surprised to hear that radio reception on the mkVII Golf is no better than it is appraently for the other models! How hard can it be to get this right in the 21st century? Anyhow, I don't want to change the Discover media head on my car, but I am interested in perhaps an RF "combiner" to augment the rear window aerial with a second aerial (somewhere easy to install). Any advice?

I don't know if my fix would work with a standard unit.

The ANS-610 has a DIN antenna connector, and the adaptor combined both antennae to the one DIN plug.

What you need is a Dual Fakra to Dual Fakra cross connected to get the best reception, but I don't know if you can get these.
