Thinking of buying a 9N Polo GTI

Hi Guys,

I've owned my MK4 Golf GTI for a little bit now and I'm thinking of moving up a few years to a Polo GTI.

I'm just wondering what is considering high milage for a Polo GTI?

I've been offered a straight trade for my MK4 GTI and I'm considering it, what do you guys think?

I know their pretty similar in terms of engine and spec, I'm just looking to move to a newer car.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Dave, Back in the UK you would have known that bodywork scraps cars. So mileage isn't that big a deal in my mind. S3 with rapidly approaching 300000, A4 Avant 240000, Polo 168000 ( 3 engine last year though LOL )

The 3 engine thing could have been avoided by doing a cam belt change and not fitting a bigger turbo etc etc. A mainly standard Polo or Phase 2 tuned one would last for ever.

Thanks for that, I guess mileage has always been a thing in the back of my mind. I should prob be more interested in the service history.

WOW S3 with 300000 is amazing!.

I never really looked at the Polo's when I was looking for my MK4, but the more I look, the more I fall in love with them.

Some of the Polo's I've seen are closing in on around 190 - 220k kms which I guess is a good show of how tough these machines are.

The 1.8T is a tried and tested platform.

They are great little cars that hold their own pretty well.

only has 3 doors - this is the only reason I do not have my 9N3 GTI anymore. It was a magic little car and I miss it daily ....

Any money that you put into the Golf is gone and unless you buy a modded Polo, then you will be starting over again.

I'd always go on condition when buying higher mileage cars. As long as servicing has been done on time, then they don't fall apart.

Mine isn't the best example, it could have been serviced at better workshops, maybe. It would still be running the original engine if I had done the belt when I first got it. Which would have meant the frankenturbo and rods wouldn't have been done. So a blessing in disguise for me really.

If the big mileage cars look sound, then I wouldn't bypass them looking for one with 50000 on.

Just figure in the cost of clutch change, if you flashed an otherwise standard car.

Also, if you plan to replace the suspension and do other mods, it makes sense to me to be pulling off worn out parts, not bits that still have plenty of life in them.

It's also a negotiating point. "she needs brakes all round, that's $600 in parts alone mate, not much life in the tyres, another 5-600 there" A full service at VW would be 3-400. A timing belt change is going over a grand if you do it with a service.

I hope you come to me for a tune though

Cheers Guys. My MK4 is modified and it's had a lot spent on it.

I'm happy starting from scratch, infact I prefer it.

Haha Gavin I will definitely see what you have to offer if I do go the 9N route!

Still a lot to consider, I've turned the swap down just because the Polo didn't look in the best shape really.

But I may sell my MK4 and buy a 9N.

The smaller size never really was a huge (no pun intended) problem unless you have kids to kart around. I used to comfortably get 1 or 2 Mt bikes in the back with the seats down too.

Improved power to weight ratio over the golf and as you'll be aware from your GTI, that 1.8T is nice and reliable. Couple of handling mods and a tune and you'll be grinning all the time.

I listed my MK4 as an EOI and I've had some good response. If you know anyone wanting a low KM Mk4 GTI, tell them to PM me .

Standard ones are pretty dull mate. If you get a standard one you can trial Custom Code Phase 1 with my spare ECU.

I'm eager to see what their like stock before going for the tune though. I never really felt the benefit of the tune on my Mk4 because I bought it tuned. Never driven a stock one.

So I test drove a 9N3 GTI on Sunday and I really liked it. I know what you mean about being dull because my Golf is tuned. Still a lot of fun though! I love how light they are!.

So my mind is made up, selling the MK4 and buying a Polo .

Haha Ant, I may just hit you up on that. Going to keep my eyes open over the next 2-3 weeks and see what's around!.

Just don't know what colour to aim for
