Used to have a straight through pipe on a Lancer GSR, sounded real nice but I'm over having a loud exhaust for a daily driver.
Put it this way,a passenger wouldn't think it was any different from stock.
Slightly more 'burbley' at idle from the outside.Inside quiet, absolutely no droning on the highway.
    I'm over noisy exhausts too!

maybe on a stock set up, sure, but with 30% less flow, how can it be? large dp with tiny, restricted cat, ..nup ..for a few hundred bucks more, you can get a properly designed, seamless and high-flowing quality system - why would you bother

Er, Neil...we've been here before -- the biggest flow constraint is in the stock dump, not the stock cat, the results are in...and some of us only paid $400 or less for a custom dump. A full system is AT LEAST another $1,200+...and this is a $30k car

Hey Tim, had I referred to the "full" system, your $ estimate would 'almost' be close, but we're talking about the system Guy's proposing here, which is a smaller system. Guy's proposed system is $1099, and most custom dp (without hf cat) or more likely to be in the $450-650 range. With the inclusion of a hf cat, Guy's system is a viable and not radically more expensive option, surely

Tim, ..just noticed you hit 500 clicks and have now graduated to 'enthusiast' status. Does this explain your need to stamp your authority on this subject?

Depends on the track day organiser. If it is class-based, and the class contemplates road-registered/able cars, then you must have pussy...if the car came with pussy

That aside, for a modern car you'd need some means of tuning to compensate for the absence of a cat

Guy, would it be possible to just get the pipe? Leaving the stock cat?

Maybe this would add another option without having to stock the shelves with another product. You'd just have it in two pieces. If that's how it fits in.

Tosspot - no, because then it would be a complete custom piece - someone would need to cut shut & modify the original cat, so you may as well go full custom like Timbo & Maccaa have done (for around $900 I think?)

If you have a look at the standard polo cat - there is actually two cats in the standard system, both mated together (primary & secondary) - this is why its pretty easy to get 30% more flow through the cat (by dumping the VW standard arrangement).

Don't get me wrong - the piping is part of the restriction, the cat is the other.

Also with a bolt on downpipe, you can remove & re-install your stock system for resale if you wish.

I'll see if I can find a pic of a standard Polo downpipe to show what they look like!

P.S. - removing the dual cat setup for a single high flow is a very common exhaust mod - RS4's, WRX's , Evo's, Fords & Holdens all benefit from this - the polo is only difference is the Polo has the two encased in the one spot.

This is a cross section of my old dump at it's thinest section and also the size that it is now.

As you can see from my next picture, the new dump looks very at home there now...
