Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Downpipe done !

After alot of umming and stuffing around i booked my car in at Newcastle Mufflers.
I dropped the car off this morning at 9am (with a very sore head, from the night out)

Picked it up about an hour ago. Pete did the following things.

    *3inch stainless mandrel bent downpipe
    *3inch '' '' Flex pipe
*Enlarged entry and exit of the cat to make it flow better.

He also mentioned something about oxygen sensors and bungs? (what a word lol)

Glad to report there are no engine lights on. The car sounds fantastic, turbo is alot louder and a fair bit more exhaust noise is being created.

The thing that makes me grin though is how the car has reacted on the road.
Boost buildup is alot stronger and faster, when its on boost it has considerably more power than it did before.

Smells a bit gross when your driving, but i think thats pretty normal for new components on an exhaust especially that close to the turbo/heat.

$300 was all he charged. Very happy so i gave him a tip aswell for good service

Pete is a top guy, if anyone in newcastle wants work done go see him !

          quick responses !!!!!

Didnt realise you guys would be soo interested, ill try and get some sound clips if you want.

300 including parts and labour. Very reasonable.

Originally got told between 800-1000 including everything in original post but WITH a new euro 4 compliant cat. VERY dear.

He said dont bother upgrading the cat, the stocky is stainless inside and out apparently. He said by upgrading the entry and exit of the cat (make it bigger) it will flow just as well as aftermarket replacement cat. For a fraction of the cost.

Why spend it on a cat, when i can go out and have a good night with friends... and the girls

I own one of the early model mk4's and from what I've seen it's a pretty tiny cat...

Polo GTI cat looks quite large.

It does have a different exhaust than mk4's ive been told.

Polo has a bit more torque, not sure if thats due to exhaust or other minor changes im sure the motor has had since mk4. Probably slightly different turbo, think polo has vvt too?

Well i can definately say today that i can feel major improvement.

Lag is vastly reduced. Massive midrange improvement.

                    Get it done

Good work Mitch...and a great price, too!

I never noticed mine on the road all that much, but the next dyno run I had boggled my mind! Let us know if you get yours on a dyno.

You'll now have something like 135+Kw ATW, which is close to the limit the KO3s can pump air for...and more than you have traction for, anyway ...all from two mods which in total cost around $2K (flash + pipe)

Sounds like a good mod... I can't find an exhaust place in Brisbane that will match that price thou unfortunatly...

Funkdancer - Please go easy on the moderation... if someone wants to remove their cat converter then thats their choice and they run the risk of a big fine as a concequence. I used to run a hollowed out cat on a previous car and to tell you the truth not much of a gain is to be had at all... There are many illegal mods out there if you look hard enough (e.g. gearknob with no H-Pattern)

I think he actually underquoted me a bit on the work. So thats why i gave him a cash in hand tip. Felt bad. Plus he did a bloody good job

Alot of people dont know that cat converter removal is highly illegal and incurs a massive fine. Soo its important that people know hence mods edit and delete.

Unfortunately they delete other vitally important information that we share amongst eachother, such as what car we raced from the lights last night and how much we beat them by ! n:

Also, i wonder how the Pogo would cope with not having a cat..? surely the dash would light up like a christmas tree with warning lights.

Clearly illegal car mods are in the same boat as boasting about street racing as far as I'm concerned.

Plus I care about the environment. So sue me.
