Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Ok guys, I'm after opinions on a new concern of mine.

Was driving home last night and took a left hand slip lane at normal speed and the gti understeered like a royal pig and then the rear end went all wobbly thereafter.

Took some more lefty's and the problem was still there. The right handers seem to be 'less bad' but still not confidence inspiring. Currently on a set of AP coilovers that Noone used to run, so I can only assume they're 2-4 years old. The rears are maxed out and the fronts still have room to go lower. I've checked all tyre pressures and wheel bolts and all appears normal. Short of having a late night feel of the rear shocks for weeping I can't put my finger on it just yet.

My concerns are possibly a rear bush of some sort has gone, but other than that I'm stumped.

Worth noting, I picked up a mate last night and when she was in the passenger seat - problem gone.

Yes, it's one of the lowest static Polo's getting around at the moment, but bear in mind it's had the same setup for over a year now, so I don't care to hear about how my control arms are pointing upwards blah blah, it's been perfectly drivable for a long time now.

I'd start with the front tyres. Tyre pressure, balding, etc. May as well check the rears. I found higher pressure in the front was better, quite low in the rear (32), but the Kumho's were a soft sidewall with wide tread and hardened prematurely.

Hmmmm, my Hancooks would be 1,500kms max at the moment. I'd really like to think they haven't worn out already, they're brand spankers! They're a 195/45/16 over an 8" wide wheel so there's a moderate amount of stretch in the equation, but I'm sure this isn't the issue as they used to grip fine before.

you mentioned, "Worth noting, I picked up a mate last night and when she was in the passenger seat - problem gone."

So get her weight, and put some bricks in -- you will kill 2 birds:
            1. no more boat
            2. even lower car

tell her to go on a diet, she clearly changes the suspension too much!

Things suddenly going all squishy is very rarely a case of something apparent have changed. A leaking shock is not going to do anything suddenly and the kind of internal failure that would (eg blown comp / rebound valve) usually only happens under shock loads

I'm afraid the only way to tell is to jack her up and slide under. I'd be suspect of the bushes as continual geometric abuse (yes lowering does have some very bad effects) could have caused one to finally scream enough and give in. It might not be obvious and just show up as a crack in the side of the bush.

...and when you're done check out the car. Be very wary of a crack in the bush...

                      ....and I'll get my coat.

just had a chat to my mechanic and he reckons its a callapsed Bush or wheels bearing, But if you jack it up it should be pretty obvious

Nicely ask Chris/Pete/Dean to pop it on the hoist. They'll be able to tell quick smart if the bushes need replacing.
