Air Con of polo gti

Drove home last Thursday and the car had been heating in 41c all day with no cover. Temp as reported by car was 45 then 44c, so this was probably more like the "real" street level temperature, sun bouncing off the asphalt etc.

It was so hot to begin with I couldn't even get into the car, just put it on full aircon, recycle and left it for a few minutes before getting on my way. Dark leather seats sure pick up some heat...

Aircon was seriously struggling to keep temps down, but I managed to get home eventually Hitting the recycle button helps big time.

Since then have gotten one of those window reflector things and hopefully that will help.

Yeah the leather sucks big time in Summer. I carry round a beach towel, have a deflector and found leaving my windows down 2cmd helps. Also I fold my drivers seat forward so it's not basking in the sun all day.

Yeah. My Euro's leather seats never suffer the same problem. Then again they're ivory white (very nice). Also have Ming windows tint which might be blocking a lot more than the tint I have on the polo at the moment (some unknown type).

On really hot days i keep the fan at about 2-3 and recycle button on. Seems to work pretty good.

I hate to bring up an old thread, but I'm having similiar troubles with my air con and was wondering if there were any fixes.

I can't see any leaks (only water drips from condensation) but when the mercury hits the mid 30s, the air con is just about useless. I drove for an hour with the AC and fan on 4 and it was still rather warm inside the car. I've booked the car in for the dealer to check it out though. Doesn't seem right that my 96 Lancer could turn the cabin into a temporary meat storage facility.

So not looking forward to driving this week -- going to be stinking hot until Saturday.

The Polo air con is not that good to begin with.

I complained to my dealer about the air con and they said it had too much gas in it. They re gassed it with the correct amount of gas. It did improve things a bit still not happy with it.

It also helps if you keep the car on circulate that way it cools down the air that is already somewhat cool, if you know what I mean.

By the way guys VW have been changing compressors on the Polos. Might be worth looking at

spot on there! having the A/C on re-cirlculate makes it much colder than cooling the hot air from outside.

also, i find that having the power setting above 2 is pretty much useless, it doesn't give the system a chance to cool the air. put it on 2 to start with, just to bring the temp down a bit, and then just bring it back to 1, you will get the coldest air that way.

If you are by yourself, it also helps to close the passenger vents. That way you can keep the aircon at a lower setting for the same amount of air on you, and the system does not have to work as hard to cool the air.

Similar to my previous MX-5 I find the efficiency of the a/c tails off at idle but gets going again as soon as the car gets going. Probably comes with a smaller engine. Although the MX has a soft top which is probably useless at insulating the cabin.
