I hope vw is open tommorow, and i get a courtesy car.

All the info and a diagram here

If you can find the right, short length 17mm spanner, you can tighten it to the point where it's quite safe to drive. There are three bolts, and my bet is at least 2 are loose. The other one that is most likely loose is the one closest to the engine block...and it's a bugger to get to ..but with patience, something cool close to hand, you can do it.

But you will need to get the bolts and the gasket replaced. As you are in Brisbane, while you are free to go to your dealer and waste a lot of time with them, I suggest getting in touch with Guy H, and seeing if he can manage the repair.

After i tightened up the second bolt, all the noise stopped, and hasn't returned yet... so i think it will be fine for the short term, though i'll keep checking every time i set off.

Wanted a courtesy car, so i'm booked in for 16th to have all the bolts and gasket replaced.

FYI springwood highway vw much easier to work with than newstead austral.

                Update:

Since i tightened up the bolts properly (16 days) they hadn't loosened. Still had it booked in, so undid 1 of the bolt to take it in. All they did was tighen up the bolts. Said the gasket was fine, and i asked them if they shouldn't be replacing the bolts... the guy i spoke to didn't seem to think so. I didn't push the point, it had taken them 8 hours to do something that took me 3 minutes to do. Also unrelated i mentioned a bolt that fell out of somewhere in my boot, they said it never came from my car. Not too impressed with the service levels... courtasy car was nice, but really just proves going to a regular mechanic for my services is probably one of my better decisions.

Will let you know if/when they come loose again, and will make sure the dealer replaces properly or go through guy. But the last 2 weeks, no rattles, weird noises on startup etc.

I work 5 minutes from Newstead Austral and I drove a good 40km to go to Highway VW. They are 2000% nicer in sales and give courtesy cars etc for services. I haven't got my car yet but the buying process was made easier, clearer and ALOT cheaper than the same deal at Austral. I also got factory fitted leather and the guys at Austral wanted to retro-fit it...

The guy i brought the my polo off said his leather was done as an after though... something about being sent to german, better leather... and he brought his from austral... i had NFI what he was talking about... (hey it was leather, no seat heaters though) however with what you said... it seems obvious now that they told him this was better for him... probably because they had either a deal with whoever retrimmed it... or had a load of none leather polo's in stock.

                    Cheeky!

Yeah, did they re-trim the doors as well? When I asked about it they kinda avoided the question.

yeah, everything was done. Its not the best quailty, rough edges, leather is great. Can't really complain, but now i know why. I didn't wonder why someone would get leather put in after they brough the car when it was optional from the factory.

Ok... noise started up again today... when i checked one bolt was rattling around. This means its lasted 3 weeks before they came loose again... will be giving dealer a ring tommorow...
