  • Turbo making weird noise

Not the lovely whinge i'm used to... still makes that... but today, it makes.. a weird ticking sound.

Kind of like a sewing machine... which gets faster and louder as the boost rises. Its chipped, and starts getting pretty loud aroiund .9bar to 1.2.

I have no idea about these sort of things... could this have anything to do with the loose turbo bolts post??? i really hope it is, cause its a cheap simple, and warrenty fix.

Mate thinks possibly a bend fin... which i guess wouldn't be cheap, simple or warrenty.

Any others experience with this sound?

I might be able to record it, shed some more light... but for the time being i'm going to stay off boost. hope it goes away or summin.

    Ideas?

edit: only guessing its turbo due to the fact it gets louder with boost, i guess it could be anything. Its not really that noticeable in 4th or above.

Get it back to the dealer ASAP!!! Sounds like it could be the bolts but better to be safe than sorry.

Try a short run with all aircon settings turned OFF. If you can't hear the noise, could be your TX valve or compressor for aircon. If you can still hear the noise, do what Neil says ... straight to dealer.

I nearly always drive around with aircon off.

Another mate thought it was just a weird boost leak. We had a good look around... the hose before the bov has a few scratches and scraps on... though it looked like it didn't have any holes, we figured it MAY have a tiny hole, and under high boost lets go for a split second, then seals, and so on, over and over.

Tried wrapping some tape round (electrical tape was all we had)... and it seemed to stop... when we took it off came back. Which was promising... that being said... just driving home, before we tried this, it stopped by itself for a few minutes... so its not definitive.

I'll really tape it up tommorow when the engine is cool and see how it goes... hopefully this is the problem.

If it is... its a little strange, as mods have been done butnothing should have really caused these scraps and marks... looks like the engine cover had done it... possibly due to the strut brace being above, and when the engine rocks under load pushes against it instead of against nothing.

If it ends up this is the problem... something to look out for if you have a strut brace... (i'll post pics later if it is) if not, i guess i'll have to wait till the new year to get it to vw, and just drive off boost.

Hmmm ... well, I'd take it to the dealer. Warranty should cover it.

You may have possibly done an engine mount and that may have caused the scrape/crack.

Sounds like loose turbo bolts to me

Let it cool then feel down behind the engine, between the firewall and the manifold. If it is the bolts, you'll actually feel them loose to touch.

Hope it's not the dreaded death rattle... ticking in a boosted engine is never a good sign

Have you been running right fuel?? Has it been really hot latey??

Nah just trying to eliminate a few things... Detonation can destroy an engine pretty quickly if bad quality fuel is used or its really hot... I thought these engines had knock sensors in them to catch detonation before it becomes a problem...

Does it still pull strong undre boost? Get a friend to drive behind you and see if the car blows any smoke...

I chucked my hand behind... one bolt basically was out... took about 2 turns and it came out. Other 2 that i could feel were tight. From the image that was posted in the initial thread i THINK its the right place... though when compared to where the forge TIP hits the turbo, its quite alot higher.

The bolt is basically in between the 2nd and 3rd spark plug, about half was down engine, at the back. I think its the top the exhaust manifold, i'm not THAT literate... but following the diagram seems about right.

I basically hand tightened it... when i go for a drive see if rattle goes. Let you know.

What would be the actions from now? Would the gasket need replacing? Bolt need replacing?

How many kms have you done so far?
And what sort of driving? (i.e. how many track days)

Cheers. Would just give us more information.

                              ---

By the time i got home (30 km's, it was almost falling out again)

When cool chucked a spanner round the bolt, gave it a really good tighten, well as much as i could in that space. When i went out, noise was almost gone...sounded like it did when i first heard it, very faint, and only at high boost.

By the time that drive was over, noise was back to being really loud, and at lower boosts.

Just checked it now its cooled down again (though its been 4 hours since i stopped, and the engine is still warm to the touch)... the bolt i tightened still seems tight... now the bolt to the right is loose to the touch... not out as far as the first was, but loose.
