Should the retaining bolt be tight? There is no way I can move it by hand, and even using a small spanner seems tight. I've left it alone in case I strip/break something. The way I read the advice on here no tools are required??
I don't like being a forum nazi, but where possible, can you add to existing threads on topics, or title threads with relevant info (referring to the thread titled: 'Just another little VW quirk'). This helps searching later on and keeps info together.

Sorry to be a ****...
happy to
FYI the thread re removing the taillight assembly is 1. Closed and 2. Pics are deleted. Perhaps we could update that thread and there would be no need for a new one
Sounds like you did your homework, thanks for trying to keep it neat and tidy. No need to delete this or anything, as I spend too much time on here I come across a lot of threads like 'help please' or something... not nearly as bad as Vortex, but pays to keep info in one place.

While we're on the topic of light removal - can I remove the headlights without taking the bumper off? I will take the engine out before I take that bloody bumper off again haha!

not a chance mate, the bolt heads are facing towards the front instead of into the engine bay

I managed to get the bolt in front of the crash bar out without removing the bumper (my hands are now cut to shreds!) - then realised there was still another bolt behind the bumper on the outer edge of the light. FML.
And after all that - the lights I was going to put in DON'T EVEN WORK - Mars Perfomance - OEM Minus.

They were on ebay like 18 months ago - few people on here have them, but yeah they fit, but they don't actually work - the wiring is crap, and globe assembly bit inside the light is broken and moves all over the place. Spent about an hour trying to fix it last night but gave up - Good looking lights, but the cheapest build quality ever.
