Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

I'd love to put a decent gear set in, with ATB, straight cuts, an extra gear, and light flywheel.
Because my gearbox gives me the $h!ts with it's noisy first gear and the extra cog up top would be great, I love 6 speeds.

Unfortunately the MK4 golfs box is not a direct bolt on job. I believe the housing fouls in a few spots. The same with the O2M I think although it can be done with some machining.

There is some info on the BT build thread on Polo UK forum, don't think he goes on much any more...

He had to machine away a couple of little spots IIRC and apart from that it was relatively straightforward.

You're kidding right? You need to replace the flywheel and clutch and swap over the bell housing but what else changes with the gearbox?
It's fitted to the GTD 9N3's in Sth Africa.

It's does weigh a fair bit more but it's supposed to be a lot stronger than the 02J/R

Starter, Linkages, Shifter, there's another part too I can't remember what it's called - I'm still new to all this, so I'm probably wrong, but it's not just a straight swap. I've just replaced my clutch and flywheel it's completely out of the question for me personally

This is what I think I will end up doing

                SQS Racing | VW 5sp Synchro-kit 02J

Only down side is you have to send them your original gear set to be upgraded which means down time as there in Czech Republic.

But the upside is you keep the same housing, clutch, flywheel etc.

We need to have a group trip to Europe sometime - Worthersee 2013 and we can drop your gearbox internals off in CZ man!
