  • Got taken for a blast

One of my bosses friends came into work today, he drives a black MPS3 Mazda.
Offered to take me for a drive.

For a car of the price tag, i though it would have had a slightly more detailed cabin.
A+B+ rear pillar covers are plain old plastic, even Polo GTI has material covering the pillars. The seat Fabric was a bit Whatever.

1st and 2nd gear had NO go whatsoever, 3rd gear packed a fair bit of punch though.

Anyone in a GTI Pog come up against a MPs3??????? would be curious to find out how it went in comparison.

I got a hot lap in a Mazda MPS3 at Oran park with d|ck johnson, now im the type of driver that sticks to the limit and doesnt speed.

that car around that track was insane. I have never been in a car so fast let alone going around corners at over 150km/h. Now i dont know if it was the car or the driver that made it so fun LOL

Sorry i cant help with the comparison of a polo gti to an mps3

the mps3 electronically limits the power in first and second doesnt it?
Certainly theyre a quick car. Its interesting that you dont see more of them on the road though. its all GTIs and XR5s here in melbourne. With the odd Astra. There must be something lacking?!

Will be slower than a chipped polo with a couple of mods (exhaust + intake)

My car is identical with an MPS with an exhaust and pod filter.

..spot on kai, see utube url:

The reason 1st and 2nd gear seems uninspiring may be due to the following:

"The good people at Mazda noticed that strapping a turbo charged engine to a Front Wheel Drive car isn’t the smartest idea in the world if you don’t have all the gadgets that will insure the car’s safety. So they strapped the gadgets along as well, so you get limited slip differential and electronic control of engine torque, as well as stability and traction control. You also get steering angle sensors to reduce torque steer in tight cornering, alongside the torque-sensing limited slip differential (also found in the Mazda RX8 and Mazda MX5) to send power to the inside wheel while cornering." Ahhh that might be the reason.

First and second gear felt like you were in an N/A 4cyl.

Wheels and motor say MPS3 does 14.5 quater mile.

Arnt Pog owners with a bit more boost under their belt getting near the flat 14 mark?

Apologies for any reference that could have been made earlier to street racing. Street racing is dangerous and racing should only be attempted at a proper drag strip.....

On my then chipped only Pogo, over a distance of 200m a 3 MPS is about 1 car length behind. Over a qrtr mile (at the strip) things are more even with nothing really between them. Without the limit in the MPS's 3rd gear it makes up ground..... I'd reckon that over a longer distance it would have pulled away.....

A car length is his front bar in line with my rear bar.

A standard Mk5 Golf GTi at that point (200m) is almost 2.5 car lengths behind and a chipped Golf Mk5 GTi (manual) about 0.5 car length (my front next to his passenger door) ahead. DSG (chipped) is slower by about 0.5 car lengths.... None of the Golfs increase their positions over 400m.

DSG is slower than a manual. VW (and the magazines) measure acceleration from the moment the car starts moving. Since the DSG has a slight hesitation (almost 0.5s) against the lights upon burying the throttle it always loses a drag race against a manual .... VW South Africa took the press to a drag strip and pitched manuals against DSG's and no matter what they tried the manuals beat the DSG's every time over 400m.

I can find and post a link to article in the press about it for the non-believers.....

In some cases as we all know driver ability (or lack thereof) also play a role......

Chipped Pog and chipped Golf are basically neck to neck?

Why is this little polo soo fast?

220kg more on the side of the Golf manual, 250kg more for the DSG than a Polo evens out the power to weight ratios...... Also seems to be more wheelspin on the Golfs due to the monster torque in chipped format.

On the strip the secret is power, weight and traction......

                          Quick calculation

Chips only, no other little power gaining bits......

                          standard Polo GTi = 10.8 kg/kw
                          chipped Polo GTi = 7.6 kg/kw

                          standard Golf GTi DSG = 9.1 kg/kw
                          chipped GTi DSG = 7.1 kg/kw

                          standard Golf GTi Man = 8.8 kg/kw
                          chipped Golf GTi Man = 6.9 kg/kw

Weight is everything - ask Colin Chapman (although that could be difficult).

I remember when I stripped out the entire interior of my 93 Charade for cleaning (except for drivers seat and dash) and I took it for a drive. The difference in acceleration, braking and handling was very marked - and the interior of a Charade doesn't weigh much - but if you take even 40 - 50kgs out of an 850kg car you really notice the difference.

I'd love to see what an 1190kg GTI with a 195kg weight reduction feels like.

My dad has an 3 MPS. I don't even want to try having a go in the polo.... particularly without a chip.

The torque limiting in 1st and 2nd is fairly heavy but it breaks traction as you wind out 3rd.
