flat6, to be honest I was expecting the unit to be a little slow and clunky (I try not to get my hopes up these days) but it's pretty damn quick.
I wish I could skin the interface so the white text was indigo like the rest of my dash, might have to see Sandy.

Not bad, how do you find the performance of the igo maps?

On my Eonon unit it can be a little slow but still manageable.

Did you shave that plastic edging off the dash to make it flush?

Forgot to mention that on first startup my unit was in Chinese.
Hit the hard 'Menu' button > bottom right touch 'button' > second from the top on the right 'touch button' > then the 1st touch 'button on the top right should open up a list of languages.

I picked up my ANS-420 off Sandy yesterday.

Here goes my review/feedback --


Let me start off by saying it's a fantastic unit. The menus and interface are very slick. iPod and USB navigation needs a little work, as the developers are aware and working on. The Primo navigation is top notch, I prefer it to my TomTom unit.

Now I thought I'd post up my step by step of how I tackled this seemingly bolt-in little fella. Other members might find it bolts in nice and simple, but this is how it happened for me and it might come in handy when others tackle it.
I'm really sorry I don't have as many photos as I'd like to assist my descriptions.

Remove previous head unit, blah blah.
Wiring up the unit is a sinch, connect all the wires where they've got to go. I had to unclip a little white thing off the factory antenna connection before I could connect it to the supplied head-unit connection.

Now first off, I found that the GPS antenna connection on the back of the headunit fouled on the very rear of the dash where the two torx screws are. I notched a nice hole for it and it gave me a little more clearance but still not enough. After many trial fits, ins and outs and still not being able to figure out just what it was that was stopping it, I removed the bracing at the rear of the dash thats attached by two torx screws to free up some more clearance. In hindsight, this may not be required after the other modifications I did later, read on...

And this is where it got me (please note there are no wires plugged in here, so no clearance problems there) --



Close, but no cigar.
I thought I'd leave it there for the night, as my patience was wearing thin and hacksaws and hammers were looking more appealing by the second. This morning I'd had a chance to compare the units further, think it over some more and had another go. Comparing the units , I found the ANS is a little longer than the factory unit --



Note the heatsink protrudes a little further rear than the factory unit.. only for the top half though. This is roughly how much the unit sticks out at the front of the dash when trying to install it. Also note the little nubbin that protrudes out the side of the heatsink (does this on both sides).

These are the things I did this morning and I got it to fit. One or more of these solutions may help if you're having trouble installing it.
Now, after examining the inside of the stereo cavity, I noticed the wiring for the dash switches appears to get pushed up and away by the stereo when installed. I pulled the harnesses going to the switches and routed them around the plastic braces so the cavity is completely clear.
I then grabbed my cutting tool and carefully trimmed back the nubbins on the sides of the heatsink. This makes installing and removing the unit sooo much easier as they normally catch on the side of the dash every time. If you look inside the stereo cavity towards the rear at the top you will see a mount for the dash on either side which I think the nubbins were hitting.

I then attempted fitting again!

I pulled the faceplate off the climate control, unscrewed the two screws holding the switches in and pushed it down in the dash. This enabled me to get my hand in under the stereo to aid it going in at the correct angle. A nice firm push on all side and corners and it finally clicked into place! --





So to review:
1. I removed the inner bracing of the dash for more clearance,
2. I shaved the nubbins off the sides of the top of the heatsink,
3. and I re-routed the wires for the dash switches for more clearance.


This was not my first stereo install but like I said, someone might go and push it in first go and make me an idiot One or more of these might help you out if you find yourself in a pickle. I didn't mind removing the bracing from the dash as I have another one coming. When this gets here I'm going to further examine the clearance issues. I think the problem could come from the fact that the dash is more compact in the Polo than the same series Golf, Bora, etc.


I only go to effort if something's worth fitting ..and the ANS is. Apart from the above issues, the actual unit is fantastic. The slick interface and navigation is a credit to the developers. As I mentioned at the beginning, the iPod/USB file handling is the only real let down which I've read they're working on. The only other little niggle is no stud on the rear for the little support rubber to fit onto, not much use to me as I cut out all the rear support, but I'm going to figure something out. If you find yourself having a little trouble fitting it, go have a beer and then nut it out because I'm more than happy I did rather than asking for a refund or fitting another unit ..it wouldn't be as good!

Good to know about the 18's.
Yeah I remember thinking that 18's looked a little too big for the Polo.
I think they fill the guards nicer than 17's, but I agree, it can look a little out of proportion on some.
17's are lighter anyway


I found a supplier on eBay. $145 per corner + $70 shipping, not bad.
I'm not sure if they're a semi, I purchased the EVO's, I think the RSR's are the semis.

Yep Federals all-round. I managed to source them for $145 ea so I'll see how they go.

Where'd you source your tyres? If I recall, the federals are considered a street semi-slick yeah? like an rsr-595 or something like that.

I normally run 18's, and they aren't too bad in terms of ride, and they look great, but I have reverted back to 16's for this trip that I am on now, and with the coilovers, I love the look!!

18's...
