Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • H+R Wheel Adapters 5x112 on 5x100

Does anybody have any experience with the H+R 20mm 5x100 to 5x112 adapters? It allows the fitment of MK5 Golf and new TT rims to MK4 Golf and the Polo GTi.

I love the look of the Mk5 GTi's 17"s and this seem like an ideal solution.

They're pretty expensive. I got quoted 880 for 5x110 to 5x120. I just checked out TM tuning and they seem a bit cheaper there but then you got to get shipping too wich would be the killer.

ECSTuning has them for US$160 a pair. So AUD$384 for 4 + shipping. Shipping has been quoted (to Oz from the USA) @ US$80. So all up landed in Oz at just under AU$500. It is pretty pricy so need to know if it works OK. No issues with bolts coming loose etc... I suspect would be pretty troublefree but just need to know from people who have used it.

That was just my first quote...

I know someone who deals with ECS tuning a fair bit. I might have a chat to them to see what they can do. That might inspire me to go back to the LM's again.... Hmmm....

it depends on brand. The H&R ones are $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. You can get other brands like FK and stuff which will be cheaper. So its all relative.

So long as theyre TUV approved im sure they would be safe. Just not legal

adaptors are legal, spacers however apparently are not. that could be blamed towards tempe tyres maybe lol

Are you sure they're legal - I've heard from a few very reliable sources they are both VERY illegal.

Especially given nothing from O/S will be ADR approved.

As fars as I could tell, as long as they bolt up from both sides, then they are legal.

Adaptors yes, spacers no. Ive had them on previous car and looked into it few years ago too.

2"'s bigger from your max option wheel is also illegal, atmospheric blow valves, ride height, reflective window tints, things hanging from your mirror, even gps units mounted to your windscreen ...... lol theres a lot which is which suprisingly they leave alone half the time!

the ADR says that spacers are not allowed unless were specced by the manufacturer. Like what porsche do on some of their models.

But yeah. Safe and legal are two different things.

They are both illegal from what I understand.... but so is any aftermarket steering wheel unless they have been ADR crash approved in the vehicle in which they are fitted

Don't get me started on the defects. I once recieved defects for -

                              * No water in the window washer bottle
                              * No H-Pattern on the gearknob

It's funny how they missed the 17" wheels and offensively loud exhaust I had on the excel at the time hehe...
