Loose Turbo Bolts - growing problem
Collapse

no blood - Alex has arms like ET, and he just loves removing & replacing turbo's on transverse engines
Anyway just found some 10.9 grade high tensile bolts, so I'm off to pick some up.
it was only the single bolt (close to the block) that came loose on ours this time - hence 1/2 the gasket looks good - the other half is vaporised

Just out of curiosity, has anyone checked to see what bolts are used in the mk4 to see if they are different?Originally posted by WhubbsieThere is nothing better than a polo badge, thats why you will notice Veyron drivers with polo gti badges.... they know where the true sizzles at!

Same bolts & manifold as on the GTI (AGU engine) - different turbo charger (slightly).
Anyway, picked up some high tensile 12.9 grade bolts & high tensile washers.
Talking to the bolt place - the factory ones are a high tensile - just when they are a spare part & don't require to be marked.
And a "stretch" bolt is not really a "stretch" bolt, its just in high stress / high temp locations they always replace them instead of re-use them.
Will see how long it last's - going to run our Graphite gasket to see what its like.
All the gaskets are good, and all will blow out if we get a bolt loosening problem.

Guy i worked on FA18 aircraft for 4 years when i had time out from the trade. So what is the threads pitch etc as i still have a very good friend working there. Strange on that when i was doing my time back home we had a couple of the 1Z turbo diesel bolts do the same! I know there is a lot of expanding and contracting going on but you would think they would have a fix. Im very interested now good thread. Ill have a look through my books.

What about wire locking them in? A cobalt drill to drill the holes maybe.Originally posted by Jimmymac View PostGuy i worked on FA18 aircraft for 4 years when i had time out from the trade. That was certainly mentioned as part of some of the remedies tried in the vortex threads, but nothing definite reported. Of course, often in forums, when something solves someone's problem, they often don't come back with a post reporting their successOriginally posted by h100vw View PostWhat about wire locking them in? H100w we wire locked the aircraft engine bolts!!!!!! Very very good mate that is the answer. Got all types of drills now and cobalt with Rocol lubricant and a good slow speed is the go bud. Good onya. Look i agree with ya as ive done Thousands and belive me the f404 engine in a FA18 runs hotter than the conventional turbo engine!!

Mine is getting rapidly worse ... so bad, even my wife commented on it (noise must have wended it's way through a multitude of thoughts on Christmas shopping, E-bay and what she was planning to cook tonite).
I'd like to get someone to run a Vagcom diagnostic on it ... see if it's throwing codes.
Anyway ... it's reaching a point now where I don't really want to drive the car too much in case it breaks down (blows up? ... who knows?).

Dave,
It won't throw a code, and it won't really do much harm in the short term - just annoys the hell out of you.
Jimmy M10 x 50mm x 1.5mm pitch. Some inconel bolts would be the go.
Lockwiring would help, but the nature of the beast is 1/8th of a turn to loosen its start. Also the location is, lts say, not really friendly to being able to get lockwire secured in there. i would be all for that too.
VW still use this high temp "assembly" paste, which is more of an anti sieze rather than a loctite. We have tried both to no avail....
