Airbox design help

I want to remove the top half of the airbox and use a pod filter in the bottom half, similar to the Jabbasport 'cone in a box' product, but minus the requirement to leave the top half connected.

Its been done, a good version is seen in the Black Polo GTI 6 speed thread, for anyone who hasnt seen this thread, some great work in there, in many ways a street car on par with Plautos' track car.

so my question is, once I fabricate the metal / plastic section to seal to the bottom half of the box, how will I keep it there but serviceable?

I'm currently running a custom Jabbasport type setup with the 3A racing pod filter, want to take it that little bit further.

a little of both. I dont expect gains, but I'd swear my car burbles more with the pod (3a filters flow really well) in the box. This design is ok, but its a pipe to a box to a cone filter, back into the top of the box's velocity stack, Maf, etc. If I can reduce the turbulance a little, it cant hurt.

It does not have to be a perfect seal, but i've played and didn't enjoy the effects of warm engine bay intake temps and lost power. On a side note, is everyone enjoying the premium boost of the cooler weather? Went for little drive last week, best I can remember in terms of power, handling and comfort.

I'm just asking that mate as I just moved to a straight pod filter direct into the maf and definetly has not hurt anything but I would do what ant did and run a feed from the fog light

Little update, pod in the box works well. Possibly slightly perkier, definitely more induction noise.

am interested in your set-up... I just installed the APR R1 yesterday, but still can't hear the pressure releasing "pssssst" sound, even with the PD160 installed, time for a pod....

Sure,

90 degree silicone reducer elbow 3-2.5" onto Maf and short 60mm 3" pipe.

Pipe goes into the Pod filter (the 3A one is pretty big but fits fine) which sits in the bottom half of thecairbox. Filter is secured to the new air box plate (mine is black plastic) with closed cell foam tape around the edge to form a seal with the air box. A few screws around the outside hold it into place.

Photos later, mine looks the same as the thread linked above.

I don't know the dump sound if the APR, won't be much if you are not chipped...

The N249 in the original design changes the way your boost is regulated / diverted, you might want to consider bypassing it for more noise.

MAF to reducer elbow, elbow to ally pipe section (3"), Pod. Pod screwed to box to top plate to stop movement, plate bordered with foam and small screws used to hold it in place.

If you have not already guessed, I like to play with these sorts of things. Tried stock, oiled filter, pod in engine bay, custom airbox (not fully enclosed, but pretty insulated, same with heatshield, Pod in a box (using full airbox) and now this. So far, this is my pref. I cant see how I would need more airflow unless I did the full exhaust and I still think it would be sufficient.

Mini Pod on the SAI feed until I get that bypassed.

You might also notice I have removed the battery housing crap, a couple of cable ties holds the fuse / distribution junk in place just fine, much easier to work in that space without the plastic shell. Airbox can now be removed very easily.

If you are considering going down this path, making the elbow fit nicely takes a bit of time to cut it down so its not squashed or bending (reducing the internal airflow). A 3-2.75" reducer would probably be a slightly better fit, nothing wrong with the 2.5, just a little tight to get on.

I would rather try out some basic designs than pony up for a unit that others have tried and the consensus is it does not make any real gains (over the PD160).

This experiment cost me $19 for the elbow, $8 for the material I used for the plate, everything else was lying around (much if it from previous experiments).

When I decide to spend a few hundred on the car, it will be for a sports cat, retune or colour coding.
