Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Milltek Exhaust

Thought I'd post up a few pics of my Milltek exhaust.
It's the full system from the turbo back.
Fit was pretty typical of a 'bolt-on', needed a few tweaks here and there. Think I might pull the muffler down and out a little more when I get the time.
Sounds pretty good, should burn itself in in the next week or so and have a nice note.
There's also a substantial increase in performance and not just a placebo effect from the louder noise.
The biggest thing I've noticed is the sound of the turbo spooling!

    Glad you are enjoying it.
The turbo back systems do give a performance boost over the cat-back systems.
How much did it set you back?

Hope we can hear the thing at lakeside happy laps in December?

Yeah it's pretty obvious looking at the stock dump pipe that that's where the restriction is. The rest of the stock exhaust system looks pretty good. Landed at my door it was $1600. Couldn't recommend the service at Rennenhaus more
Haven't heard about Lakeside in Dec, is there a VW thing or general public?

$1600 isn't bad for the full system.
My bits and bobs ended up around that price as well.

        See here for lakeside info:

At the moment it is just a VW family thing that i am trying to organise however if we can't fill all the spaces then we can open it up to all brands.

          Sounds like fun
After chasing some elusive vibrations and moving the muffler down, I discovered what I thought was the exhaust hitting the bumper was actually coming from some little vents in the spare wheel well. If you look in the spare wheel well back towards the rear of the car there's two vents with little flaps on them. The flaps were.. flapping Sounded like a vibration when your driving. I've removed the flaps and all is well (easy enough to put back in if I have to). Does anyone know what purpose these serve?

They are over pressure vents for when you close the doors on the car. They are like one way valves, so that when you close the door, the air vents out though these, but they don't allow exhaust gasses back into the car.

Hmmm.. I thought it might be keeping the exhaust gasses out. Seems odd that they'd be flapping around from the exhaust though, unless it was creating some kind of pulsating vacuum :/ See how I go.. if I get smoked out I might have to figure something out I'm finally loving my exhaust with no rattles/vibrations!

Is the muffler the same fitment as stock one, I like the look of the standard twin pipes.

They're pretty much identical, just bigger and better I love the dual tips
I've dropped the muffler down a bit now so it sits in the same position as the stocker.

I also just lowered mine a little. Have you found you cant help but drop down a gear and smash it through every tunnel you go through now? Haha.

I do that with mine too
Shame most of our tunnels are too short of cost $5 to go through.

Shopping centres/undercover parking are good though

Its funny when people look around with the 'what the hell is that' face and realise the noise is coming from a little Polo!

Tunnels, what tunnels?? I want to smash it all the time now haha
On another note, fitted up an APR R1 diverter and it feels like I've unleashed the beast!
I had Guy check the stock diverter for me when I had it chipped but it must have started leaking since.
To all those chipped and still running the stock diverter, seriously consider upgrading. I thought my diverter was fine but it feels like I've added another 20-30hp by the seat-of-the-pants now
Next to fit the uprated dog bone engine mount on the weekend.

                            Good luck with that one.
It made my car shake since it transmitted the engine vibrations through the rest of the body.
I ended up going back to stock.

Might be better for the polo though.

Well fitted the dog bone mount up this afternoon, easy as pie. No need for presses or anything like that. I used a hacksaw blade to carefully cut the plastic outer of the stock mount and it practically fell out after a few light taps.
First impressions.. there's definitely a noticeable amount of engine vibration coming from the new mount. It's not bugging me at the moment though and seems to have tightened things up between gear shifts (no engine rocking in between) Yet to see if the missus is ok with it...
