Well i have had a 205 GTi, a 206 GTi, a 206 GTi 180 and a 306GTi6 in my time. Have the Polo GTi now.
The 205 GTi is SUPER fun but quite old now. Rattles galore, would be hard to find one in good condition for cheap but they do handle the best of them all.
The 206 GTi was a step up in comfort and it FELT quicker, handled OK stock but could have definitely done with more power, hence moving to the GTi180.
The GTi 180 seats are PORN. With some work they go really well AND are comfortable, BUT i had all sorts of electrical problems with mine in about 2 years of ownership which saw me sell it.
Still have the 306 GTi as a project/wannabe track car. Its a good in between of the 205 GTi and the 206 GTi180. Handles almost as good as the 205 but has better comfort and is a little bigger which makes it more practical. The 6 speed box is a godsend, it really is. Wish i had the money to give it more attention but alas it's all gone into the Polo for now.
Now that i have the Polo i personally think its the pick of the bunch. I realise that they might be a bit more than the 206's but for build quality and peace of mind that the electrical gremlins wont rear their ugly french heads, as well as the superb tune-ability and comfort .. i think i found my car for the next few years at least.
My 2c.
Edit: Forgot to mention, havent driven the new 207 GTi so cant comment on that.

Why did you think so much of the 6 speed gear box? I found the older 5 speed S16 a bit busy on the highway (about 30km/h per 1000rpm in 5th) but the stories I heard of the fubarred RH turning circle put me off the thought of upgrading to the GTi6.
I agree the 205 Gti was the pick as far as pure handling - I found the S16 a bit nervous at the rear when REALLY pressing on (in normally spirited driving, the lift off oversteer was very handy). All the smaller Peugeots have been massive disappointments as drivers cars since the 306 IME.

I always found myself wanting an extra gear in the 206 GTi/180. Could cruise comfortably in 6th then drop it a few gears at will to give it some stick. Yes, the turning circle was ridiculous, haha ...
Sometimes busy = engaging drive.
Having driven so many Peugeots i went for a drive in a Clio Sport 182 Cup and i must say for the price they are at now they are an awesome buy. But i am over french cars.
