Polo GTI VS Peugeot 207 GTI

Hey fellas,

breaking balls again, I've been in the market for a Polo GTI for a few months now, but the right one is yet to pop up in VIC
(the next dealer who posts a 08 POG with 40,000km on the clock for 22k is going to mysteriously 'disappear' )

ANYWAYS, I'm getting really upset with my polo situation so today had a look at a PEUGEOT 207 GTI for sale.

It doesn't look as nice as the polo, but is a bit bigger, has a few more wanky features and when they were both new the PUG was nearly 8k dearer, yet is now the same price as a used polo gti now!

Just wondering if anyone here nearly went down the Peugeot path?

I know some here might be biased, but if you have any reasons as to why I should continue to focus on the Polo & steer away from the Peugeot I'd love to hear.

Depends what you want from it really. If you are expecting to drop some cash on it, the Polo can be aweseome.

Any idea what you can do tuning wise with the Pug?

I've heard you can remap the Pugs just like the Polos.

atm not that keen to drop cash on it though, just after a nice daily thats still fun to drive.

i used to work on Peugeot. All i can say is the current "hot Hatch" is nothing like its predecessors. 206 gti 180 was fun but you had to wring its neck to get any power out of it. the 205 gti was the most fun of all. factory tune the 207 feels slow. the interior may look nice but it is not a nice place to drive in compare to the polo. Steering is very dull, due to the electric steering. ride quality is ok. reliability is like any other car. some are riddled with problems where others are problem free. I'm sure there are many tuning options out there for the 207 because it uses the same engine as the mini (1.6 turbo)

My wife had a 207 GTi for a while .... nowhere near the performance of the Pug. Nothing like a mates 206GTi which felt fast and nimble. The 207 felt lumbering and not really direct with the steering. Take one for a drive and see what you think. I'm sure you can get the Mini tuning options that are out there, but I would never have swapped my Pug for it. She now has a non-GTi 207 which in all honesty I prefer over the GTi version she originally had - the GTi didn't like getting hit up the bum by a hilux

The last good Pug gti was the 306 gti6. If you're looking for a French alternative to the Polo get Renault.

For an everyday driver, they are a great car.....can lap Wakefield faster than a Cooper S (Motor Mag~2007)! Great seats! See if you can get your backside into a 'Le Mans' edition, even a diesel one!

Common failure with the shared BMW/PSA engine is the turbo's oil cooler line can start to weep.

I had a 206 GTi180 from new which was faultless for 4yrs before she got traded in for a Pug diesel wagon, again, faultless.

Cheers fellas, I had a look at a PUG yesterday that was real clean... just waiting to see if the look grows on me.

There are so many weird reviews about the Pug, some rave about how good it handles, then some say how much body roll it has.. Internet has confused me.

I'll check out AussieFrogs, heart still wants a Volkswagen, head and wallet say otherwise..

its difficult to read about different opinions on the web. the best thing to do is test drive both cars, that way you get a good idea on the pro and cons of both cars

it only mentions the tune, but its lowered (I'd guess coilovers, looks a little low at the front for H&R springs). I'd ring and ask, find out what else has been done. A swaybar wouldn't surprise me if they've gone for coilies.

Probably. My GF has the 206 GTI, was good but is ageing. Its light, a little over a ton.

We had a go in a 180, wasn't much different. N/A 2.0 engine in both. A claimed 180hp is doable, but the Polo has torque in spades by comparison IMO. Its physically to small for me to drive normally, otherwise one in good condition can be a fun drive.

I was lucky enough to have my car in MOTOR Mag in August 2007.... Was a 205 GTi vs 206 GTi180 vs 207 GTi article when 207 was first released.

Outcome was, the 206 to be a winner for 'all round ability' as per journo and, other drivers. 205 also great but, technology has moved on.

I liked the 'upper spec interior' of the 207 but it had no 'fizz'. Heaviest of the lot and, engine had no soul....

As suggested here before, take both the Polo and 207 for a spin. Buy whichever one is best FOR YOU!

Yep for shared engine with the Cooper S.

Yep, GTi180 is 130kW/180bhp. Standard 206GTi is 100kW/138bhp.
