Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Thanks for helping me out over the phone Dave. No I didn't get it in, lol - I gave up as I was getting bruised and battered, lol.

Putting it back together was easy as pie, and I installed the SEAT intake you ordered in, no brainer. lol. The other TIP is absolutely easy (not installed, but it's quite straight forward), just the one from the intake to the turbo - it's a straight forward disassemble, but a PITA assemble.

    Over it, lol.

In this pic, I had no problem, getting the bottom part of the tip into the turbo flange (pic not reflecting it though). In fact, I had about 100% of it in. The left side required strength which I managed to get over. I just couldn't finish it off by sliding it in. WD40 worked in most parts, but the strength of having to push it in was exhausting after so many attempts.

For all who can see that black steel pipe, the coolant pipe, man, that was restricting me, making the job an absolute PITA.

"As for guidelines for installation, take your time and remain calm. Dont think its going to be a 5 minute job like I did. Figure that its going to take an hour and a half then just be happy when it takes you less. Once you get the old one off, spray some WD40 on the inlet of the compressor to help the TIP slide around. From there I just put it in from the top, and keep pushing down on it until it "pops" into place. What makes it hard is there is a metal coolant line a few inches away from the turbo and the TIP has to get sandwiched between the two until the TIP slides over the inlet of the turbo.
Also, before you put the tip on, loosely install the clamp that goes on the turbo side and slide it as far up the hose as possible. If you wait until you have the tip on to install the clamp, you will be hating life."

Thank you, someone else recognizes it's *#&@! hard! I need to work out or something..

I admire anyone who can easily do this, even after having done mine myself, I am loathe to offer assistance as it isn't easy.

When I installed mine, I ripped skin off my hands and swore for hours cursing that the bastard wouldn't go on, eventually had my dad come over and lend a hand after having a few drinks to settle a little. I had a mate buy one and wanted a hand, I was not going to go through it all again, so he went and paid to have it installed ... he had his car back on the road 3 hours after dropping it in to be installed, it just isn't worth the pain and high stress levels that a self install induces !

we did two here on Saturday, i did one in about an hour or so. and brumue did his without any knowledge of how to do it within about 2.5 hours including his t/b hose.. never had to take any extra bits on, was harder then my mk4 gotta say that .. much tighter fit. but got through it all.. not an easy thing tho definitely!

contact brumue as i think he has a spare Forge TIP as well for sale

It was a amazingly fun task. If you do get the opportunity to install one of these do not at any cost let it slip past.
I loved the added complexity that the removal of the strut brace added, it led to my coil overs moving. I also enjoyed connecting the hoses and the cuts on my hands were an added treat.

The results are worth it though IMO, it seems to be spooling sooner and has a bit more power in the upper rev range.

As fuzion mentions I have a spare Forge TIP for sale. I'll be starting a new thread in the FS section shortly.

Don't get me wrong fellas, the disassembling of the pipes etc was enjoyable, in fact too easy I didn't know what everyone was pissing on about on the forums about the difficulty of this install. Took about 30 minutes.

Then, I figured it out when I couldn't get the pipe in, lol. I'll tell you what, I've installed extractors, intakes, pulleys, exhausts, etc,. but none other like the TIP has given me the sh*ts, lol. So much so, I'd like to see this done by someone in person, ROFL.

I swear, if you saw the bruise on my arm, you'd think I got bitten by a snake.

Installed the Forge TIP yesterday - it took a while for my mechanic to do it - mostly because he tried to reuse all the original clamps (because I've told him that they will fit). In the end he needed to replace 2 of them with larger ones.
I'll do some vag-com logging these days - to see what are the changes.
