  • Manual gearbox issue

I went for a drive around the blue mountains and noticed that the gearbox was producing a strange noise in 5th gear. It's a high pitch sound which increases as the RPM increase. The 5th gear was sometimes hard to engage and it actually "popped out" 2 times. As I accelerate, I could feel a force on the gear knob pushing it backwards. All of a sudden, everything went back to normal...
Anyone would know if anything is going to fail ? What should I do ?

    Thanks a lot !

Popping out of fifth and noise not good mate, get it check straight away, as its fifth with luck it hasnt spat anything. fifth casing can be removed with the trans still in the vehicle.

depending on when the noise happends it could be a lot of different things,i am guessing its only in 5th?
if this is the case,it rules out diff, input shaft and out put shat bearing and also clutch and release bearing, this sound like a sth gear problem,as posted eairly this can be viewed and removed with out removing the gear box, there is a end cap on the eng of the gear box that can be removed(oil musted be drained first.if thr prob is only on trying to engauge gear it could well be the addjustmen on the syncro lever fork witch is also in the end cover,if it is making the noise all the time when in 5th i would advise not to drive as it could well be gear damage witch at this point will have already contaminated oil and could cause dammage to all bearing and gears in box, hope you get it sorted mate

We know all about those 5 speed boxes mate. Feel free to bring it to Campbelltown and we can inspect and fix it for you.
Either 5th gear, or selector fork are common as Swallowtail says. If you get to it before 5th explodes, it can be done in the car and the box saved, if you wait till it explodes, it will cost you a lot more in the end.

That sounds very similar to the problem I had with my original gearbox before it died last year. 5th gear was whining and the pitch varied with speed as well, before sheering off inside the box! Get it checked ASAP!
