It looks like the Audi A1 will be based on the new polo.

I am sure that a sport version of this would have to offer more than the polo gti - all wheel drive?
A1 Quattro would be fun to drive but it looks ugly as.

A1 specs are a bit mediocre, S1 and RS1 could be monsters...

They're saying that the S1 will be the first Audi 'S' car to NOT have their famed Quattro system.....

I imagine this would be due to the weight that a quattro system would add.

The S1 would still be at least 2 years away here.

They have only just leaked the brochure for the RS5 and the A5 has been out for 2 years or so?

I'd say it is highly unlikely there will be an RS1. And if it did happen it wouldn't be for at least 5 years. RS models (generally) appear towards the end of each platform's life cycle and it's at least that long ago that serious RS3 rumours began.

An S1 will happen, whether or not is has quattro is still up in the air.

I've had some fairly good mail to suggest that quattro has been approved for the A1 platform. That means there are two probable options. The S1 that most of us would prefer, or it could be used on a Q1 based on the CrossPolo. This would also offer a counter product in the MINI Countryman space. The more I think about the more I think we might see a quattro equipped Q1 first. Hopefully it's used for both.

                That makes me sad
I can't see the point -- any point -- to a FWD only S1. What would be the attraction in Europe, over the Polo GTI or the Seat?

Despite the suggestion the A1 competes with the MINI, there's nothing in the current A1 line-up that even touches the Cooper (let along the Cooper S or JCW), so Audi will need to put their smarty pants on. And, given it's a company that has championed quattro, that seems the logical way to go. But I have absolutely no evidence to support such clear logic

To put Quattro on the Polo/A1 you would need a new rear suspension setup. It would also add 75-100kg to the overall weight of the thing.

An extra 100kg to get more power to the ground

Plus you get some lightweight wheels and remove the spare and you have already saved about 30kg.
Alluminium roof/hood/tailgate would save a bit of weight as well.

                        Definitely worth it imho.

Wheel spin and losing traction is our enemy along side with heatsoak. And not to forget to mention traction of all 4 wheels in the wet - another tick in safety.

the more i read about the Polo though the more i fall in love with the idea of the new one. It has everything i was after when i purchased my current one reluctantly instead of a Golf 5 GTI

it has more power and higher speed and its got the DSG box and it also can look as elegant if you take the leather interior which i am sure will be offered as an option and then its got the xenon lights as well and it wont be using the stupid manual gearbox of the current polo gti

so for me it s win/win situation all round - im definitely going to get this car when it arrives to South Africa no matter the price cos here it will definitely still be around R100k (ZA rand) cheaper than the Golf 6 GTI. and the biggest attraction for me is that due to the smaller engine it will be kinder to my pocket at the fuel pump (not as good as a diesel but still better nevertheless) since its a a 1.4 and considering the new emission taxes that have been introduced here i will be a lower tax on this one than on the Golf 6 GTI

altogether i think that this is going to be the last slightly sporty runaround daily driver i get before i move over to only buying huge luxury sedans like mercedes etc

It will be interesting to see pricing, because my prediction is that the high spec Polo (as above) will hover just below the base spec Golf 6 GTI. This will be quite intentional on VW's part.

What would be the reason for no manual transmission? I know the dual clutch auto's are pretty sweet but still, you will always have manual buyers, even more so for a turbo 4cylinder. The new Polo looks very nice! I love it all the inside and outside. Bummer about no manual transmission though.
