Also remember that there were 3 variations of gearboxes for the 9n / 9n3 models. I've got a MY09 and the gears do crunch when you shift too fast. It doesn't happen all the time but I just learnt not to rush the change. Also putting in Redline MTL soon which should also help.

Having said that I would still prefer a manual any day. I like changing gears makes me feel like I'm going faster

Golf GTI's? I had not heard this. Polo seems to be dependant on which gen of gearbox it was supplied with.

Ditto. Its not the greatest at trying to change really fast and can be hesitant when the revs are not well matched. MTL helped mine for feel and easier slotting in, but I've not had any issues. Shame there have been bad batches...

2.0T would be very nice, but it would only need 150-160 kw to match the pace of a 'rocco R so I'm guessing it would be a hopped up 1.4.

Don't thing VW would ever let the Polo cross paths with the Golf GTI specs. I think we might have the same engine just beefed up a bit like the Cup Edition just falling short from the 150kw of the Golf GTI's. But this is just all speculations of course.

I don't know... There is a convo in the Mk6 thread about the new Polo GTI compared to the Mk6 with same engine...

Most of the mk6 guys say they aren't interested due to internal space for comfort and storage...

I don't see why the Golf cant be the family option and Polo cant the youthfull option.

On saying that, out of the 3 Polo GTI's near me, 2 are driven by old ladies... I was so excited to see who was driving them, then I felt a little sickened

DSG has ZERO impact on the car's ability to do skids. It's ABS that stops skids from happening.

It's actually the traction control system that stops it if you want to be pedantic.

No, instead it's much easier to do a controlled stationary burnout in a FWD car using a good 'ol clutch. Not impossible with a DSG by any stretch, but easier in a manual.

Either way, my point continues to be that there isn't a valid argument on why the new Polo GTI needs to have a manual option.

Yes there is. Some people enjoy driving manuals and having control over the clutch. If VW don't provide it, those people won't buy the car.

It's like arguing that there's no valid reason to be able to change the temperature on the climate control or the bass and treble on the stereo.

Totally agree, if they don't provide me the manual I want, I will vote with my wallet and buy something else .....

I will not consider it unless I have a manual option. May not buy the manual but I want the right to choose. When a manufacturer makes a decision like that for me I often buy a competitors product.

And VW whilst a semi-premium brand certainly aren't the best out there with some really valid alternatives.

Or the Fiesta RS, if it gets released these things will hammer. In looks the Audi A1 just doesn't appeal to me.

I see the DSG as being an opportunity for VW to encourage more people to step into a Polo GTI.

Sure, some people still prefer manual (which I usually find is simply because they haven't driven a car with a sequential box, but none-the-less), but I can tell you now that this will be the direction that all performance cars move down within a few years.

At the exotic level of sports cars a large majority are moving down the sequential path, and it won't be long before its the same case with more affordable sports cars (The DSG in the Golf's and the SST in the Ralliart/Evolution are good examples).

If nothing else, I think you'll hurt resale without the DSG, as is the case with the Golf.

I owned a 2002 M3 with SMG and it was terrible. Let myself be talked into it as the next best thing after owning a E36 M3 (manual) and a Z3 M Coupe. Worst BMW I have ever owned and I blame the SMG.

I have testdriven every new sporty VW since 2005 in DSG and have not liked a single one yet. Some people just like manuals more.

I am prepared however to give the Golf R DSG a chance to impress me though...in the Polo I have no interest in a DSG.

Hrmm, I've had nothing but praise for the SMG (well, SMG-II, my experience with the SMG-I in the E36 was woeful at best).

This is not true. I payed a couple grand less for my manual golf and got a few grand more for it when I sold it because there were no other equivalent manuals on the market.

So all things considered I ended up close to 4k - 5k ahead of a lot of DSG owners.

Have a look at any roadtest of a SMG equipped BMW and see if you can find 1 that was complimentary. Established view in the press is that the SMG was s**t ..... its the reason BMW ceased the SMG and replaced it with a DSG version.

In America it was so bad that the buyers refused to buy a SMG M5 and that it is the only market where a M5 was offered with a manual option.

Agree, Have a look on Carsales.com.au .... Manual Porsches & BMWs & VWs are sold at premiums over the autos .... .... true enthusiasts are not interested (yet) in auto's or DSGs .....

That was one of the reasons why I went with the Polo over the Golf. I couldn't get a new Mk5 Golf Gti in manual in Nov.
