Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Yeah I'm not aware of any car in Australia for sale that has an ADR for a CF bonnet. CF splinters into very sharp pieces, I wouldn't dare touch them for a road car. Go the light weight wheels, I reckon you'll get a better weight saving anyway. Besides, unless you track the car I don't see the point in reducing weight. I might be wrong but I doubt it would save you much in fuel consumption.

And one completely useless post (this one)
The OP hasn't replied back or stated the reason he wants a CF bonnet anyway.

It's a bonus for him to get some sensible options and alternatives as well, before he wastes his money and drives a defective car, voiding his insurance, and could hurt someone if the Bonnet shatters into a million pieces.

I think this is much more to do with simply a poorly constructed bonnet than anything to do with carbon fibre being inherently dangerous.

I mean, most race cars are made out of the stuff, and are involved in much higher speed crashes than road cars on a regular basis.

Haven't heard of any race car drivers being impaled by their carbon bonnets.
Just because it happened to you, doesn't make it interesting

          Haha.

I'll make a mental note to never go for a ride in one of these cars for fear of being impaled by pieces of CF:

mostly just for looks from us modders..

Doesn't the Maclaren have a CF tub and aluminium body?

And I said ILLEGAL CF bonnet.
It's all fine if the car manufacturer has designed and built a crash reg compliant CF bonnet. I VERY much doubt some aftermarket CF bonnet would be compliant.

Alternatively, people have painted their CF Bonnet so no one would know it is an illegal CF bonnet.

The weight loss and cost benefit is just not worth it though for a 10kg saving.
Remove spare tyre and other non essentials and run a half tank of fuel to save more weight and costs nothing.
There are no ADR approved CF bonnets, there is one place that sells ADR approved Fibreglass bonnets but they weigh up there anyway.

If you are looking at it as an asthetic mod then the weight reduction isn't really an issue. However if you have removed weight already and are down to these options then it is a fantastic way to lose weight. It can be painted factory colour and no one would ever know until they opened the hood. Cost wise it isn't too bad. We would produce them for around the $850 region for a complete CF bonnet not FG with a CF overlay. + Shipping on top of that price.

Cost wise they aren't too bad but they are all illegal, making sales would be nice but I am not going to lie to people about it

Lighter brakes are quite a hefty expense for most people as I assume most people would go for that as part of a big brake kit.

Agreed with this, fantastic way to do it but as I said above matched with carbon work it can provide even better gains.

V8 supercars as far as I am aware, there are also numerous time attack cars that use large amounts of carbon fibre.

We don't presently have a mould for the Polo or most of the other VW models but if we had interest from 3-5 people we would be willing to look at producing the items.
