Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Anyone know where to get a carbon bonnet?

Hey people, I'm after a carbon bonnet, anyone know someone who makes them?

  • #2
I don't think anyone makes one for the Polo, don't see the need for one, the stock Polo bonnet is pretty light.

If your going for the "look", paint your bonnet black, and if you want the weight reduction, take out all your seats and the spare wheel and put in a light weight seat.

Also consider removing the a/c setup and fill your fuel tank half way and install a fuel surge tank to prevent fuel starvation.

there were some carbon ones on ebay a while ago.....from china . looked pretty cheap so the fitment might have been off. if you're looking at importing one, be vary wary of it's place of fabrication and quality of workmanship. I'd ask to see a bucketload of closeup pics and a test fit on a car.

Ian of www.rennenhaus.com.au had a CF bonnet on his MKV R32. He also imports lots of CF stuff.

Aren't CF bonnets essentially illegal? They don't crumple like a steel/Aluminium bonnet.

Proper carbon fibre bonets that are ADR approved are allowed.
Alternatively, people have painted their CF Bonnet so no one would know it is an illegal CF bonnet.

The weight loss and cost benefit is just not worth it though for a 10kg saving.
Remove spare tyre and other non essentials and run a half tank of fuel to save more weight and costs nothing.

Just get some matte carbon film if you are after it for looks only, can find the details if needed.

Don't molest a european car with cheap japanese ricer crap.

real CF or paint the bonnet.

If you want to reduce weight and really want to spend money, get some super light weight rims and reduce the unsprung weight. Handling and performance gains will be much greater.

I've done this and makes a good difference. Pretty sure carbon bonnets are too expensive and mostly illegal.

Lighter brakes would be the next good unsprung weight improvement!

Well, I have seen the result of an illegal CF bonnet on a car in a crash. It pierced the windscreen and took out the passenger.
