Are the bulbs easy to replace? I wanted HID lights, but due to the fact that I have to modify the rubber cap + I won't pass warrant of fitness in NZ with it, meaning too much hassle.

Decided to get PIAA bulbs from overseas as I've done with past 3 cars all with satisfactory results.

I see two screws, are they starshaped?? are these easy to get? (the driver to undo I mean...)

An allen key or hex key will get your fog lights out to change those. To change over the head light bulbs you don't need to screw anything.

Rare to see them explode but most likely the filament will break inside.
the oil residue your fingerprint leaves behind on the glass is the cause, creating a hot spot on the glass.
The concentration of heat in one spot usually causes the filament to break due to it weakening under the higher temperature.

But before doing that you might to check the wiring for the lights can handle the higher wattage. I have seen ones where the wiring has almost melted because of the higher wattage bulbs.
I also want to put 100w globes (or higher) into the hig beam lights of my MkV Golf and whilst there is a risk with the higher temperatures I have found a solution (or should I say grease).
I changed out the globes on my Toyota Kluger and noted that the plug is full of thermal grease - it stops the heat buildup going past the plug and keeps the wires cool.

This is what I will be doing - filling the plug with thermal grease when I replace the bulbs... BUT will the "systems" cope with more than 100w?

Okay: The bulbs are not easy to replace and give me the absolute irrates.

I have changed out power steering racks, alternators, starter motors and never has anything proved to be so damn annoying as changing the headlight in a GTI.

Maybe it's my small hands... changing main beam bulbs were easy...

The park lights (which I have changed to PIAA LEDs) were nightmare on passenger' side. Just had to pull the wires and unplug it. Then plugging it back, I had cuts on my hands afterwards!

I guess being LED it should last long time... I had them since 2004 since my Airtrek Turbo!! So 3 years... still going strong.

Re the dull orange like parking lights. Has anyone changed them so they are a brighter white?

                Not LED's like above.

I changed my rear number plate lights to leds.

I shall get photos if they are wanted.

Yeah I changed mine. I used the globes that came with my Phillips crystal visions that I bought to replace the fog lights.

                      Polo GTI bulbs

                      I havent touched my bulbs,

Terrible experience with my last car, i had to take the headlamps out to change the bulbs, the headlamp alignment on the road was never the same.

Im hesitant to replace the bulbs unless they physically blow out and are in need of replacement.

But on this topic, the headlamp beams are quite strong and they offer fantastic light coverage

With any car I've owned (which is not many) one of the first things I do is get a nudge bar made up and fit some dirty big CIBIES up front. My last car (modded Daihatsu Charade) I had four huge Turini Apollos - I liked the rally look and talk about turing night into day! They would light up the entire road (and then some) for over a kilometre in front.

Brilliant for shifting slowies out of the fast lane.

Some of you will be horrified but I'm tempted to do the same with my Polo............

If I did a lot of driving out bush - I'd do the same in a flash. There's no substitute for a good set of roo spotters.

In the city though, I find the Polo's headlights more than adequate. I'd have gone for HIDs if they were on the options list - but I won't be retrofitting them (legalities - you can't do it legally unless

                          a) The headlights are auto-levelling
                          b) You have headlight washers.

I've known plenty of retro-fitted HIDs to fall foul of the boys in blue. I'm not terribly surprised - most people don't do it properly (ie they don't put projector lenses/auto levelling in) and blind oncoming traffic. I'm mildly photophobic (ie my eyes are quite sensitive to bright light), so I'm a little more conscious of it.
