Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Forge FMIC Group Buy - Polo 9N3 GTI

I had been trying to organise a group buy for Front Mount Intercoolers, but as there was insufficient interest in a imported intercooler with someone locally making up a kit, I've investigated a number of options.

Forge are willing to facilitate a group buy on their intercoolers, similar to the last group buy, but a little cheaper with the current exchange rate (lets hope it does not change).

If you would like some information on the Forge unit, follow this link.

I've PM'd all those who expressed interest in the previous thread, if you are interested, please PM me.

the current price is less than $1100 landed, all up. The specific price may vary depending on the number of people who go in on it and there may be an increased freight charge if the unit has to go to a remote location.

I'm not looking to take payment, at some stage I will be trying to get all the interested parties to make contact with Forge for making payment and working out any specific requirements.

I will be trying to collect all the details by mid next week and expect a 1 month wait after payment to receiving the units. Forge have quoted a shorter time, but I don't want to give any false hope here.

Appologies for starting a new thread on this to the Mods, just wanted to be clear and concise on what was happening as the old thread was shrouded in little bits of information and my bitching.

I'm in too. I'm happy to be at the end of the list as I need to scrape the money together but I don't want to miss out on the group buy this time.

Ditto. Can we do this a bit later in say December? I'm short on cash but don't want to miss out on a group buy either

I don't want to delay this for anyone else though so I think it's worthwhile if it gets organised reasonably soon otherwise it will be delayed because of christmas/new year. If i remember correctly from last time it took forge a while to get organised and build the kits anyway as they build them on demand so that will probably help people trying to get the cash together anyway.

Great response, I have received 3 confirmed, so with myself, we have 4 takers.

We will need a minimum of 6, so hopefully we get 2 more parties in by next Wednesday, then hopefully they will be here before December!

I'm keen, but is $1100 that great a deal for a group buy?

How much would it usually be sent to Australia? What do the local distributors sell it for?

The retail on the intercooler is 509 pounds, which today is $899AUD.
Freight on the intercoolers is around 150 pounds ($266AUD). This is a good price, I'd be having a guess at saying this is close to cost, I've been quoted a lot more for sending less.

All up, thats $1165. We have not confirmed exact pricing as we don't have confirmed numbers, saving off that amount will be around $100 or more.

Is this a huge saving? No. Is this a saving? Yes.

It would work out cheaper if we got them shipped in bulk somewhere and then distributed locally from a central point, but someone would need to be in charge of this and personally I don't want the responsibility and don't have the space for them.

Local distribution: No one stocks them that i'm aware of, generally speaking most tuning parts for the Polo's are brought in as required other than mounts and cheap bits they go through fairly regularly. When I was looking into suspension, it was much cheaper to get it from the UK yourself - by quite a lot.

I have no affiliation with Forge or any tuners, I'd be happy for someone to take over and negotiate a better price, but so far there are a few takers, a few interested people and a lot of opinions. I don't think Forge are going to heavily discount the intercoolers, from the last group buy they were busy, companies that are busy have less need to discount heavily to get the business.

If you want a better price, by all means, try and get one, i'd be happy to pay less if you can work it out.

Bulk shipping would attract duty too, due to larger value invoices.

No it won't be cheaper to send it all in bulk to a single address and then redistribution because that's going to involve twice the cost of shipping as these boxes are too big for Australia post so courier is going to cost an arm and a leg not to mention the extra cost of import duties if they were shipped in all at once. Cheapest is for Forge to ship them individually to each of you guys that way, you save on redistribution costs and import duties. Believe me, I'd be pretty surprised for someone to stick their hand up to organise such a logistical nightmare not to mention chasing up everyone for payment and being the one responsible for it all if anything bad happens (Been there and done that and believe me I've learnt it the hard way. It ain't easy especially for such bulky items but easy enough for small items that Australia post can send). For those who may think it is, then they've either been doing it as part of their day job and can get cheap courier rates or they have never done such a thing before in their life. In my opinion, its best to give Forge a list of those interested and ask Forge to accept payments individually and ship direct to the buyer.

Whichever way this heads, I wish the person the very best of luck for who ever sticks their hand up for this. Organising group buys for smaller items such as air filters, stubby antennas, engine mounts etc etc etc is the easiest in terms of logistics and costs.

Hope this helps guys. I just don't want to see anyone losing sleep over these kind of problems as I have.

                      Cheers.

Hmmm, not as much interest in the Forge IC's as I'd expected... Still short of the minimum for the group buy.

If you want one and have not expressed interest, please let me know before Thursday.

Its a lot to spend on just a front mount intercooler upgrade, my budget for a fmic is set to $600, picking up my gti this weekend.

I have to disagree sorry. $1100 for what you get is a bargain. A full fmic kit with a reinforced front bar that should all fit together nicely. If i didnt already have a FMIC id would be in.

Hope it all goes well noone........
